UWI Commences Preparation of a New Strategic Plan

The University of the West Indies has embarked on the preparation of a new Strategic Plan that will shape the development of the regional institution for the period 2007-2012. The process commenced formally with a two-day event held at the Mona Campus on May 1-2, 2006.

The University of the West Indies Press will be moving to their new office building during the week of June 19, to June 23. To facilitate this move, the Press will be closed during the period and will re-open on Monday, June 26. Basic Research Skills Training Workshop

The Epidemiology Research Unit of the Tropical Medicine Research Institute (TMRI), UWI in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH), Jamaica and the Caribbean Health Research Council (CHRC), Trinidad and Tobago will host a Basic Research Skills Training Workshop from June 19-22. The venue will be Medallion Hall Hotel, 53 Hope Road, Kingston 6.

Caribbean Migration: Forced and Free Conference – June 12-14

The Most Hon. PJ Patterson will officially open the Conference on “Caribbean Migration: Forced and Free” on Monday June 12 at 6:00 p.m. at the Undercroft of the Senate Building. UWI, Mona Campus.

CARIMAC Summer Programme

The Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication will be hosting its 24th annual Summer School Programme between June 5 and July 29. The Summer Programme offers an opportunity for individuals interested in media and communication to whet their appetites in the field. It also provides an opportunity for practitioners to sharpen their communication skills and receive academic certification. Many students, after completing courses in the Programme go on to use the training they receive in their present career or make career changes in media and communication or related areas.

Development Seminar for Aspiring Leaders

Hon. Maxine Henry-Wilson, Minister of Education and Youth will be the guest speaker at the opening of a Development Seminar for Aspiring Leaders on Sunday June 11 at 5:00 p.m. at the Rex Nettleford Hall, Multipurpose Room. The seminar which is organized by the Office of Student Services is entitled “The SCM: Aspiring Leaders Partnering for the Caribbean.”

Medical Sciences Conference – Call for Abstracts

Abstracts are invited for oral and poster presentations at the Faculty of Medical Sciences 15th Annual Conference to be held from November 15-17. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is July 31.

Mona School of Business

The Mona School of Business is inviting all its alumni and present students to “YAAD NITE 2006” on Saturday, June 17 in the car park of the Mona School of Business from 6:30 p.m. to midnight. Admission is your business or contact card and $200.00. There will be music for your dancing pleasure, entertainment and lots of prizes and surprises. Real “yaad” food and refreshment will be on sale.

Promoting Wellness on Campus

The University Heath Centre will be hosting a “Breast Cancer Awareness Day” on Tuesday, June 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Mobile Mammography Unit of the Jamaica Cancer Society will be providing mammography services as well as educational videos, distribution of brochures and an opportunity to discuss your concerns about breast cancer with the medical staff. The cost of the mammogram is $440.00 with your health card (LOJ).
A down payment of $200.00 is required to book a place and the remainder will be collected on the day of the test.

Verene Shepherd is New President of the ACH

Professor Verene A. Shepherd was elected as President of the Association of Caribbean Historians [ACH] at the Association's recent 38th annual conference in Trinidad & Tobago. Professor Shepherd follows a long tradition of UWI leadership of this prestigious regional academic body, others having been Professors Roy Augier, Bridget Brereton, Carl Campbell, Douglas Hall and Woodville Marshall. The next annual conference of the ACH will be held at the Mona Campus of the UWI and will be hosted by the Department of History and Archaeology."
