UWI/Guardian Life Premium Teaching Award
The University of the West Indies, Mona in collaboration with Guardian Life Limited will host the UWI/ Guardian Life Premium Teaching Award 2008 on Thursday, October 2, 2008 at 6 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre.
The UWI/ Guardian Life Premium Teaching Award is designed to recognize outstanding members of the academic staff for teaching excellence and to enhance the quality of teaching at UWI. The Award underscores the importance placed on teaching and learning at the University.
UWI Health Centre Open Day
The University Health Centre in an effort to continually educate, inform and cater to the needs of the UWI community will host an Open Day on Thursday, October 2, 2008 starting at 9 am at the Health Centre Visitors’ Parking Lot. The Open day activities will commence with a brief opening ceremony followed by rap sessions discussing sexual health, nutrition, psychological health among other topics.
Also available are FREE blood pressure checks, height and weight checks and other tests such as HIV Rapid Test at a minimal cost.
Research & Publications Fund and Graduate Awards
Applications are now being invited for Research and Publications grants and graduate awards. Applications forms are available on the Graduate Studies and Research website at www.mona.uwi.edu\postgrad . Completed application forms should be submitted by Tuesday, September 30, 2008, one electronic copy should be submitted to postgrad@uwimona.edu.jm and two hardcopies signed by the candidate’s Head of Department and Supervisor should be handed in to the department.
Study Skills Workshops
The University Health Centre hosts a series of Study Skills workshops aimed at helping students to achieve academic excellence. The upcoming session being held on September 18, 2008 at 2 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture theatre (N1) is titled ‘Improving your Note taking Skills.’ Other sessions in the Series will highlight topics such as Time Management; Stress Management and Improving Your Test Taking Skills.
All UWI students, especially new students are invited to participate in these sessions.
Library Training Session
The Mona Information Literacy Unit (MILU) at The University of the West Indies, Mona will be holding training sessions at the Main Library training room for ALL students. The first training sessions addressing Searching the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) will take place on September 15-19 starting at 9 am, 12 noon and 6 pm each day.
Students are asked to register for ONE session by signing at the whiteboard in the Catalogue Hall, Main Library. Upcoming training sessions will be held on Searching Databases.
Late Registration for Postgraduate Students
Postgraduate students are advised that late registration will be effective from Monday, September 15 to Friday, September 19, 2008.
Walter Rodney Conference
The University of the West Indies, Mona hosts the historical Walter Rodney Conference from October 16-18, 2008 to mark the 40th anniversary of the organized student protest that occasioned the banning of Walter Rodney. The Conference is organized by the Institute of Caribbean Studies and the Centre for Caribbean Thought, in collaboration with the Guild of Students at the UWI, Mona and the Africana Studies Department at Brown University.

Rising Stars Top Five Finalists Perform at Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts
The Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts will feature the top five finalists in the Digicel Rising Stars Competition, Khalil, Lashana Stevenson, Cameal Davis, SLR and K’Alee, at its first Lunch Hour Concert of the 2008/9 academic year. The Lunch Hour Concert season begins on Thursday, September 18, 2008 at 1:00 pm and continues each week at the Philip Sherlock Centre.

UWI Students Benefit from Cooyah Scholarships
New and returning students at the University of the West Indies, Mona will benefit from a number of scholarships through an initiative of Mary Seacole Hall and Taylor Hall, UWI, Mona supported by Cooyah through its Club Cooyah Scholarship. These scholarships will offset the cost of tuition and school supplies.
Students have an opportunity to sign up for and secure their chance of winning the scholarships by participating in the Big UWI Cooyah Sales Event being held on Friday, September 12, 2008 between 10 am and 4 pm at the UWI Students’ Union.
UWI Goes Cashless
The University of the West Indies, Mona, is embarking on a cashless payment system for various student-related activities across the campus. The initiative is being introduced on a phased basis and commences during the first semester. The Cashless system will kick off with transactions made at the Main Library and its branches. Students will therefore be able to make payment for copying, fines, printing and other services offered by the library via this cashless medium. This system is designed to provide students with an easy, safe and convenient method of payment.
