Public Lecture
A public lecture will be delivered by Professor Waibinte Wariboko, Head of the Department of History, UWI, Mona entitled The Evangelical Enterprise of Black West Indian Missionaries in Southern Nigeria, 1895 – 1925. The Lecture takes place on Tuesday October 28, 2008 at 6 pm in the Multi-Functional Room, UWI Main Library.
The university community and the public are invited to attend.
UWI School of Nursing, Mona (UWISON) Awards Ceremony
The UWI School of Nursing, Mona (UWISON) will host the Awards Ceremony for the winners of a Logo and Theme/Title competition on October 28, 2008, at 2:00 pm at the UWISON Lecture Theatre. The Competition is an activity of the Jamaican Mother-Daughter HIV Risk-Reduction research/intervention project of the UWISON in collaboration with the New York University College of Nursing and the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. The project also involves partnering with a number of local community-based organizations (CBOs) such as the Women’s Centre of Jamaica Foundation, Children First
Faculty of Medical Sciences Student Awards Ceremony
The Faculty of Medical Sciences hosts its annual Student Awards Ceremony on Thursday, October 23, 2008 at 6 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. The Awards Ceremony is aimed at recognizing outstanding student performers for the last academic year.
“Beyond Language Boundaries: Oral Traditions Across the Caribbean”
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, UWI, Mona and the Alliance Française present Celebrating Reading / Lire En Fête / Celebrando La Lectura under the theme: “Beyond Language Boundaries: Oral Traditions Across the Caribbean” on Thursday, October 30, 2008 at 2:30 pm in N3. The panelists include: Jean Small (Guyana), Amalia Liu (Colombia), Hector Poulet (Martinique), and Amina Blackwood-Meeks (Jamaica).
10th Lucille Mathurin Mair Lecture
The Centre for Gender and Development Studies, Mona Unit will host the 10th Lucille Mathurin Mair lecture on Thursday, November 20, 2008 at 5pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona. The guest speaker will be Professor Elsa Leo-Rhynie, Professor Emerita, Professor of Gender and Development Studies and former Pro Vice Canhcellor and Principal, UWI Mona. The lecture is entitled ‘The UWI glass ceiling: splinters, cracks and scratches’.

“Managing Sickle Cell Disease: The Chronic Care Model”
Sickle Cell is the commonest genetic disorder seen in Jamaica. In keeping with the mandate of the Sickle Cell Unit (SCU) to improve the lives of individuals affected by sickle cell disease through research, education and clinical care the SCU of the Tropical Medicine Research Institute at UWI hosts a conference under the theme "Managing Sickle Cell Disease: The Chronic Care Model" on October 30-31, 2008. The Conference is designed to share knowledge about the disease in order to improve the care and treatment of persons affected by sickle cell.
Occupational Environmental Safety and Health Short Courses
The UWI Occupational Environmental Safety and Health (OESH) programme offers its first suite of short professional development courses from October 27-31, 2008. The courses include: Essentials of Occupational Safety and Health (30 hours), Hazard Recognition, Evaluation and Control (6 hours), Accident Investigation (6 hours) and Conducting Workplace Inspections (6 hours). The presenters at these workshops are from diverse educational backgrounds and experiences and have been selected to deliver a high quality course tailored to meet the challenges facing Jamaican workplaces.
Dream the Impossible Dream
“Dream the Impossible Dream: My Journey to the Stars “ is the title of the public lecture organized by the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences in conjunction with the Institute of Jamaica. The lecture takes place on Monday, October 13 2008 at 6 pm at the Inter Faculty Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona.
Professor Mercedes Richards, chair of the Nominating Committee of the American Astronomical Society will deliver the lecture. She is the first astronomer in the world to make clear images of the gravitational flow of gas between stars in any interacting binary pair.
Gender Based Violence: Causes and Solutions
The Centre for Gender and Development Studies, Mona Unit hosts a public discussion to examine the recent reports of gender based violence, abductions and disappearances. The public discussion takes place on Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at 5 pm at the Multifunctional Room, The Main Library, UWI, Mona.
The forum is aimed at examining the causes and exploring concrete solutions. It will also share information, explore new options and strengthen linkages between institutional programmes to reduce gender based violence.
