Walter Rodney Conference
The University of the West Indies, Mona through the Institute of Caribbean Studies, Centre for Caribbean Thought, the Guild of Students in collaboration with and the Africana Studies Department at Brown University has organized the historic Walter Rodney Conference on October 16-18, 2008 at the Assembly Hall, UWI, Mona. The Conference will mark the 40th anniversary of the organized student protests in Jamaica that were occasioned by the banning of Walter Rodney from Jamaica.

Building a Region Fit for Children: Promoting Child Rights Through Research is the theme of the third annual Caribbean Child Research Conference that is being staged from October 21-22 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.
Faculty of Medical Sciences Student Awards Ceremony
The Faculty of Medical Sciences hosts its annual Student Awards Ceremony on Thursday, October 23, 2008 at 6 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. The Awards Ceremony is aimed at recognizing outstanding student performers for the last academic year.
Humanities and Education Awards Ceremony
The Faculty of Humanities and Education, UWI, Mona will hold its annual Faculty Awards Ceremony on Thursday, November 13 at 2:00 pm in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1).
The university community and the public are invited to attend.
Spanish Tutoring Programme
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures has initiated a pilot programme aimed at improving the level of Spanish of S11A students (first year Spanish students) with an entry level of CSEC 1 and 2 in Spanish, using peer tutors from the third year programme. This programme runs from October 6 to November 27, 2008.
“Catch a Fire”
As a way of highlighting the significance of Jamaica’s culture and heritage The University of the West Indies, Mona hosts a series of activities in October, the month in which National Heroes’ Day is observed. The events are aimed at commemorating some of Jamaica’s significant historical events. The first of these activities is the showing of a documentary titled “Catch a Fire” on Friday, October 10, 2008 at 6 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona. The documentary focuses on the Paul Bogle and the Morant Bay Rebellion.
Making a mark in the rocks
The Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, UWI, Mona hosts Professor Simon Mitchell’s inaugural professorial lecture titled “Making a Mark in the Rocks.” The lecture is scheduled for Thursday, October 9, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. in the New Chemistry Lecture Theatre. His lecture explores the geology of Jamaica and how it relates to the evolution of the Caribbean region.
