Climate Change: Impacts on the Caribbean
The University of the West Indies, Mona and CARICOM’s Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre are jointly hosting a conference on Climate Change: Impacts on the Caribbean. The conference begins with an Opening Ceremony on Friday, June 15 at 6:00 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. Professor Anthony Chen, Department of Physics, UWI, Mona and Dr. Leonard Nurse, Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES), Cave Hill and Chairman of the Board of the Climate Change Centre will give keynote presentations.
Hurricane Tips
The Hurricane season runs from June and continues until November; thus far it has proven active. Here are a few tips on what to do during a hurricane.
• Stay calm, and be alert during the hurricane.
• Do not go outside during the hurricane, unless it is absolutely necessary. Flying objects may hit you and can cause serious injury or loss of life.
• Keep your radios on and listen for the latest information and bulletins.
• Ensure that your refrigerated food items are used up in order to avoid spoilage.
Institute of Caribbean Studies Summer Courses
The Institute of Caribbean Studies invites students of the University of the West Indies to register for courses being offered by their Department in Summer. These courses include: FD11A - Caribbean Civilization; AR25A - Introduction to Caribbean Cultural Studies; AR25F - Caribbean Films and their Fictions; AR25R - The Culture of Rastafari; AR25S - Deconstructing the Culture of Sport; AR25X - African Religious Retentions in the Caribbean and AR35R - Rastafari in the Global Context.
M.Ed. Specialization in Educational Measurement
From January 2008 the School of Education will offer a specialization in Educational Measurement in the current Master of Education Programme. This Masters Degree will be offered online, initially, to facilitate optimal participation of students from the countries served by the UWI. The programme is expected to be completed within two years.
On-line Certificate Programme in Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment
The University of the West Indies Distance Education Centre (UWIDEC), the Organization of American States (OAS)/Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) and the Faculty of Social Studies, Cave Hill launched an On-line Certificate Programme in Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment on Monday, June 11. The Programme is in response to the need for continued education in substance abuse prevention and treatment in the Caribbean.
The University Singers Concert Season 2007
The University Singers Concert Season which started on Thursday, May 31 continues until Sunday, July 1 at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI. The show times are Thursdays – Saturdays, 8:00 pm and on Sundays 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm.
The 2007 Concert season features the choir presenting a wide repertoire, inclusive of classical, spiritual, gospel, folk, reggae and calypso.

The UWI Lions Club Centre for Students with Special Needs
The University of the West Indies, Mona and the Lions Club of Mona in partnership with the UWI Development and Endowment Fund will host a Handing Over Ceremony for the Mona Lions Club Centre for Students with Special Needs. The event takes place on Friday, June 15 at 3:00 p.m. at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. His Excellency the Most Honorable Professor Kenneth O. Hall, Governor General of Jamaica will be the guest speaker at the Ceremony.
Wellness Tips
It is better to contribute to the common welfare of our community than to think only of ourselves. It is better to live in harmony with others and our environment than to live in conflict with them. Remember that it may be as simple as a smile, a “thank you” or a genuine complement.

William Dennis Lecture
The William Dennis Lecture will take place on Thursday, June 21 at 5:00 pm at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre located at the University Hospital of the West Indies. Professor Peter Figueroa, Chief, Epidemiology and AIDS at the Ministry of Health will deliver the Lecture entitled The HIV Vaccine, Why it is so Important?
Professor Celia Christie of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Child Health, UWI, Mona will also make a presentation on An Update on Paediatric and Perinatal HIV in Jamaica. Professor Emeritus Edward Baugh will also read from his poems.
4th Annual Caribbean Philosophical Association (CPA) Conference
The Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy, Institute of Caribbean Studies and the Centre for Caribbean Thought, as a part of The Caribbean Philosophical Association (CPA) will host the Fourth CPA Conference, June 27-29, at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus.
