Four to be Awarded Honorary Degree at 2007 UWI, Mona Graduation Ceremonies
Four eminent persons are to receive honorary doctorates at the two graduation ceremonies scheduled for the Mona Campus to be held in November. They include a Roman Catholic priest, a stateswoman, a noted philanthropist and a distinguished Caribbean scholar and educator. Dr G. Raymond Chang, a son of Jamaica living in Canada, is Chancellor of Ryerson University and a passionate advocate of continuing education and young adult learning. He has been a generous benefactor of St George’s College, his high school alma mater and also of The University of the West Indies.
ILO and MSB First Capacity-Building Workshop
The International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Mona School of Business, UWI, recently held its first capacity-building workshop for employers’ organisations under the banner, The Caribbean Academy for the Management of Employers’ Organisations (CAMEO) on the Mona Campus.
This programme is jointly sponsored and organized by the ILO Sub Regional Office for the Caribbean (ILO SRO Caribbean), the ILO International Training Centre and the ILO Bureau for Employers’ Activities (ILO ACT/EMP) in collaboration with UWI, through the Mona School of Business.
Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health Public Lectures
As part of its effort in creating increased national awareness in Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health issues, the Department of Chemistry, UWI, Mona through its Programme in Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health (OESH) has organized three public lectures. These lectures take place on Monday, July 2, between 1 pm and 4 pm, in the Chemistry Lecture Theatre 2 (C2).
Panfest 2007
The UWI Panoridim Steel Orchestra will present Panfest 2007: 30 years of Jammin! from July 27-29, at the Courtleigh Auditorium (formerly the Island life Auditorium). The show times are Friday and Saturday at 8 pm and Sunday at 4 pm and 8 pm. Tickets are on sale at $800 and $650 for UWI students. Special 30th Anniversary memorabilia will be on sale. UWI Places Shines in Venture Challenge in Atlanta
The UWI team of O’Neil Grant, team leader, Sasha Ann Smith, Kirk Tyrell and Dawn Brooks returned to the island recently after being placed sixth in a field of 18 schools in the 2007 Opportunity Funding Corporation Venture Challenge (OFCVC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The team, Eso Innovators Ltd, had earlier won the UWI Venture Competition, an annual Business Plan Development and Presentation contest among UWI graduate groups organized by the Mona School of Business (MSB).
‘ICT NETWORKING THE ECONOMY’
As part of its Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Trade annual initiative, Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC), UWI, Mona will convene a 6 day training workshop titled “ICT Networking the Economy.” The workshop takes place from July 2-7 in Antigua and Barbuda. It is aimed at building on the major ICT initiatives for the Caribbean learning economy through increased awareness and involvement of leaders in becoming engaged in promoting knowledge societies.
"Purposeful Speech Writing and Effective Public Speaking"
The CARIMAC summer programme is currently underway. One of the courses being offered is "Purposeful Speech Writing and Effective Public Speaking". This course seeks to equip participants with knowledge and skills that can be useful in areas of communication that require speaking publicly to an audience. The course promotes the concept that public speaking has a special role in advocacy as a means of garnering support by sharing information that will make audiences think, feel and do. The course is being offered at a cost of $12, 000.00 and will run from July 10-18, 2007.
4th Annual Caribbean Philosophical Association (CPA) Conference
The Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy, Institute of Caribbean Studies and the Centre for Caribbean Thought, as a part of The Caribbean Philosophical Association (CPA) will host the Fourth CPA Conference from June 27-29, at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus.
CANQATE 4th Annual Conference
The Caribbean Network for Quality Assurance in Tertiary Education (CANQATE) 4th Annual Conference will be hosted by the University Council of Jamaica under the theme “Transforming Tertiary Education to Meet Global Challenges.” This Conference takes place from October 9-11 at the Sunset Jamaica Grande Resort and Spa.
Commemorative Linguistics Lecture in Honour of Professor Lawrence D. Carrington
The Head of the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy, UWI, Mona, Professor Hubert Devonish, will deliver a commemorative lecture at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts on Tuesday, June 26, at 5:30 p.m.
His lecture is titled “ While You Were Away: The Exciting New World of Caribbean Linguistics ” and will be in tribute to retiring Director of the School of Continuing Studies, Pro Vice Chancellor Lawrence D. Carrington, Professor of Creole Linguistics.
