Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry Symposium – January 3-6

The Department of Chemistry, UWI Mona will be hosting its Twenty First Biennial Symposium on Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry from January 3-6 in the Chemistry Lecture Theatre 5. This symposium, which began in 1966, is the longest running international scientific meeting in the Caribbean. The upcoming conference will be attended by about seventy overseas participants. These include a number of distinguished chemists from academia and industry in the Caribbean, United States, United Kingdom Switzerland and Japan.

Research on Gender Based Violence in Jamaica

The Centre for Gender and Development Studies, Regional Coordinating Unit has completed a Research Project, funded by the Canadian International Development Agency in Jamaica, which examined gender-based violence in Jamaica with a view to determining the root causes. A number of quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection were used, including interviews, focus group discussions in communities and among children and young adults in schools, communities and institutions.

Temporary Discontinuation of Extended Opening Hours of the Admissions Section

The extended opening hours of the Admissions Section will be suspended from December 28 to January 6, 2006. Opening hours will therefore be: Monday to Friday - 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. They revert to the extended hours January 9, 2006.

2004/2005 Campus Registrar’s Award

Four members of staff in the Registry at the UWI Mona Campus were named Recipients of the 2004/2005 Campus Registrar’s Award at the Registry’s Christmas Luncheon held at the Mona Visitors Lodge and Conference Centre recently. The awardees were Kathleen Gayle of the Public Relations Office and Sandra Pusey of the Secretariat for Service, Ian Gooden of the Human Resources Department for Productivity and Beryl Roberts of the Campus Registrar’s Office for Service and Initiative.

Bahamas Conference

The School of Continuing Studies, UWI is pleased to announce the holding of the Bahamas Conference, from June 1-2, 2006 in the Bahamas. The Bahamas Conference is a multi-disciplinary conference focusing on issues relevant to the Bahamas. This is the eleventh and final conference in the School's country conference series. The conference will be open to the public and will provide a forum for the discussion of local issues. Abstracts are invited from persons with a research interest in the Bahamas. Deadline for the receipt of abstracts is March 3, 2006.

Irvine Hall Gate Entrance

The Irvine Hall gate is now closed to vehicular traffic to facilitate roadwork to upgrade that entrance to the Mona Campus of The University of the West Indies. The project will entail the widening of the existing roadway leading off campus and the construction of a new guardhouse at the intersection of Gibraltar Camp Way and Rousseau Road.

Natural Products Conference

The opening ceremony of the Mona Symposium on Natural Products and Medicinal Chemitry will take place on Tuesday, January 3 at 9:30 a.m. at the Chemistry Lecture Theatre 5

Nursing Midwifery Conference and Mary Seivwright Day

The Nursing Midwifery Centre of the UWI School Nursing will host an International Conference and Mary Seivwright Day under the theme Changing Visions to Reality through Nursing Research 1966-2006. The Conference will be held from June 1-3, 2006 at the Sunset Jamaica Grande Hotel in Ocho Rios. The 2006 Conference is a special occasion for the School of Nursing as it celebrates 40 years of service to the development of nursing education in the Caribbean.

UWI Upgrades Facilities for Basic Medical Sciences

Teaching and laboratory resources for students in the Department of Basic Medical Sciences in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Mona have been significantly upgraded as part of an initiative within the Faculty to expand and modernise its facilities.

Digicel Foundation Chair in Telecommunications Policy and Management

Following on the establishment of the Digicel Foundation Chair in Telecommunications Policy and Management at the University of the West Indies (UWI) in April of this year, and the subsequent appointment of Dr. Hopeton Dunn as Director of the Digicel Foundation Programme at the Mona School of Business, a team from the Foundation toured the Mona School recently and held consultations on the progress of establishing the new Chair.
