Condolences
The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus community extends condolences to the family and friends of Ricardo Brown, a postgraduate student, Management Information Systems and Damien Newman, a final year student in Management Studies, who died recently.
Fellows of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh
Two Professors of Medicine at the UWI Mona Campus have been elected Fellows of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. They are Head of the Department of Medicine, Professor Everard Barton and former Head of the Department, Professor Charles E. Denbow who received the accolade earlier this year. Fellowship in the Royal College of Physicians is conferred on Physicians who have attained high academic and clinical recognition in the field of internal medicine.
Lost Financial Calculator
A reward is being offered for the return of a SHARP EL-733A Financial Calculator, which was lost in the vicinity of the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), Faculty of Humanities and Education. If found, please contact the Office of the Faculty of Humanities and Education or telephone 391-1899.
Ramabai Espinet
The Institute of Caribbean Studies at the University of the West Indies, Mona, in association with the Department of Literatures in English, is hosting the visit to Jamaica of Trinidadian writer Ramabai Espinet, now resident in Toronto. Dr. Espinet will do a public reading from her novel, The Swinging Bridge, on Monday, December 12 at 6:00 p.m. at the Undercroft of the Senate Building.

The Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Medicine
The University of the West Indies Medical Schools which were formerly accredited by the General Medical Council (GMC), Great Britain will be the first in the region to undergo accreditation visits by the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Medicine and Allied Health Professions (CAAM). The CAAM was formally established in 2004 by CARICOM Heads of Governments to replace the overseeing role of the GMC.
CAAMs immediate responsibility is the accreditation of all medical schools located within the participating countries of the CARICOM community.
The Juici Patties Outlet
Plans are well advanced for the opening of the Juici Patties outlet in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences for Semester Two of the 2005-2006 academic year. The outlet is being constructed as part of efforts by the UWI, Mona Campus to be more responsive to the needs of the student population, by establishing eating-places at easily accessible points on the Campus. Commercial facilities such as KFC, Submerge and Pages have been installed at Mona, and over the years, an outlet has been placed in each of the Faculties of Social Sciences and Humanities and Education.
University Book Shop
The University Bookshop will host its Customer Appreciation Day on Thursday, December 15 from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m. Entertainment is by Sounds of Joy.
“Young Scientist” Award
Lecturer in the Climate Group Studies Section of the Department of Physics at the UWI Mona Campus, Dr. Michael Taylor, has been named recipient of the Young Scientists/Technologist Award for 2005. The award was presented at the 19th Annual Conference of the Scientific Research Council, which was held at the Pegasus Hotel with the theme “Energy in the 21st Century”. The Young Scientists/Technologist Award is an annual award, which was first presented in 1990. The award is based on research activity, publications and a paper presented at the conference. Dr.
Book Launch and Lecture on Mental Illness and Personal Identity
Near Death Experience: A Holographic Experience’ is the title of a book by Dr Oswald Harding, Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy. The book will be launched at the Mona Visitors Lodge on Thursday, December 8, beginning at 6.00 p.m. It explores near death experiences (out of body experiences) as a trans-personal phenomenon and our current understanding of reality. Guest speaker at the book launch will be Professor George Graham of the Universities of Alabama and Wake Forest in North Carolina, USA.
