Foresight-Based Model Workshop

A new foresight-based model of development planning, developed by the University of the West Indies and the University of Technology, Jamaica with the University of Surrey in the UK, is now in demand in South-East Asia. Professor Anthony Clayton, who leads the foresight project team, has been asked by the UN to present the foresight model at a three-day workshop in Bangkok in December. Delegates from Thailand, Malaysia and other countries across the region will attend the workshop to learn about the new approach to development planning.

Irvine Hall Gate Entrance to be Upgraded

Roadwork to upgrade the Irvine Hall Gate entrance to the UWI Mona Campus is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, December 21. The project will entail the widening of the existing roadway leading off Campus and the construction of a new guardhouse at the intersection of Gibraltar Camp Way and Rousseau Road. Due to the amount of roadwork proposed, vehicles will be prohibited from going beyond Irvine Hall's entrance on Rousseau Way while construction is underway.

Kim Robinson wins Commonwealth Foundation Competition

Dr Kim Robinson Publications Coordinator/Editor at the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies has been named the regional winner for the Americas of the 2005 Commonwealth Short Story Competition 2005. Her winning entry was entitled “Spreeing in the SUV". The Commonwealth Short Story Competition is sponsored by the Commonwealth Foundation and administered by the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association.

Launch of Lion Heart Gal

Sistren Theatre Collective and the Press, UWI, in association with the Institute of Caribbean Studies, present the launch of the new edition of Lion heart Gal: Life stories of Jamaican Women on Monday, December 19 at 6:00p.m. at Red Bones Blues Cafe. Dr. Honor Ford-Smith, editor of the collection and author of one of the stories, will speak and members of the Collective will read. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.

Logo Competition

Students attending eleven schools in the immediate vicinity of the University of the West Indies were invited to enter a competition to design a logo and formulate the theme for a Reproductive Health Conference that the Advanced Training and Research in Fertility Management Unit is planning for October 2006. The Conference will provide a forum presenting and discussing issues in sexual and reproductive health among a wide cross section of stakeholders.

Professor Verene Shepherd

Professor of History in the Department of History and Archaeology at the UWI Mona Campus, Dr. Verene Shepherd has been appointed Chair of the Board of the National Heritage Trust. Professor Shepherd has also been appointed by the Prime Minister as Chair of the National Planning Committee to plan commemorative events for the bicentenary of the abolition of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade (1807-2007).

UWIHARP

The UWI HIV/AIDS Response Programme (UWIHARP) has received the sum of J$200,000 from The City of Kingston Credit Union (COK), towards the Introduction and Piloting of Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) on the Mona Campus in 2006. Voluntary Counselling and Testing is a prevention strategy used to educate persons about HIV while helping persons to find out about their HIV status. This in turn leads to better control of the HIV epidemic. UWIHARP intends to introduce the programme in collaboration with the University Health Centre.

Annual Long Service Awards Ceremony

The Annual Long Service Awards Ceremony for members of staff at the UWI Mona Campus will be held on Monday, December 12, at the Mona Visitors Lodge and Conference Centre, beginning at 5. 00 p.m. Awards will be presented to just over One Hundred members of the academic, administrative, professional, technical and support services staff who have served the institution for periods exceeding 15, 21, 30 or 40 years. Guest Speaker at the function will be President and CEO of Blue Cross of Jamaica, Professor the Hon. Errol Morrison. Entertainment will be provided by Miss Myrna Hague.

Centre for Caribbean Thought

The Centre for Caribbean Thought, in association with Ian Randle Publishers, invites interested persons to attend the presentation "After Man - Towards the Human: Critical Essays on Sylvia Wynter" on Wednesday December 14, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Vice Chancellor Emeritus Professor Rex Nettleford will be the speaker at the function, which takes place at the Undercroft of the Senate Building. The Centre for Caribbean Thought will also host a Symposium entitled "The Ideology of Orality in African Literature" on Thursday December 15, at 2:00 p.m. in GFT 1(Sir Alister McIntyre Building).

Christmas Holidays

The Principal, on behalf of Finance and General Purposes Committee, Mona has agreed that in addition to the Public Holidays on December 26 and 27, 2005 and January 2, 2006, the Mona Campus will be closed on December 23 and 30, 2005 at 12.30 p.m.
