Pure and Applied Annual Awards Ceremony

The Annual Awards Ceremony for Undergraduate Students of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2009 starting at 3:00 pm in the Chemistry Lecture Theatre Five (C5). This year’s ceremony will see the recognition of lecturers who have received outstanding scores on their course assessment for the last academic year.

The keynote speaker will be the Honourable Karl Samuda, Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce.

25th Annual Elsa Goveia Lecture

The Department of History and Archaeology hosts the 25th annual Elsa Goveia Lecture on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at 5 pm at the Philip Sherlock Lecture. The Lecture is being delivered by Professor Brian Moore, Professor of History and Africana and Latin American Studies. It is entitled “The Struggle for the Cultural Soul of Jamaica after Morant Bay”.

Re-designation of the Centre for Gender and Development Studies

At a recent meeting of the University Finance and General Purposes Committee (F&GP), the Committee approved the re-designation of the Centre for Gender and Development Studies (CGDS) as an Institute of the University of the West Indies. Henceforth it will therefore be known as The Institute for Gender and Development Studies.

Mona Campus Council Meets on March 6

The regular meeting of the Mona Campus Council will be held on Friday, March 6. The highpoint of the meeting will be a report from Professor Gordon Shirley, Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal, UWI, Mona on developments at the Institution over the last academic year. Campus Council will also receive reports on research and other activities being undertaken by the various departments as well as on the financial status of the Campus.

First GPS Navigation to be Launched in Jamaica by MonaGIS

The Mona GeoInformatics Institute (MonaGIS) will launch Global Positioning System (GPS) Navigation, the first of its kind in Jamaica, on Thursday, March 5, 2009 at the Senior Common Room (SCR), UWI, Mona. The launch will see the roll out of the innovative GPS Navigation which features 69 categories including: police stations, attractions, banks, post offices, gas stations and restaurants and 10, 000 Jamaican roadways.

Career Expo -“Career Progression in a Global Recession”

“Career Progression in a Global Recession” is the theme of this year’s annual Career Expo organized by the Office of Placement and Career Services in the Office of Student Services and Development, UWI, Mona. The Career Expo which is scheduled for March 5-6, 2009 concludes the Career Month activities.

2009 International Women’s Day Celebrations

The Centre for Gender and Development Studies, Mona Unit, marks 2009 International Women’s Day Celebrations on Thursday March 5, 2009, with a lecture at 5 pm at the Multifunctional Room of the Main Library. “Honouring the Past, Celebrating Women, Embracing Gender Equality: The Legacy of Ambassador Angela King” is the titled of the lecture.

UWI Press Authors Get Awards

The University of the West Indies Press was the youngest and newest publisher of the thirty publishers named in the group of prestigious Professional and Scholarly Excellence (PROSE) winners and finalists awarded for publishing excellence. B. W. Higman, Jamaican Food:  History, Biology, Culture was awarded Honorable Mention and Finalist status by the Association of American Publishers for PROSE Awards in the category of Archaeology and Anthropology.

PSCAA International Arts Festival Rains Down with Dance Umbrella

The Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts International Festival concludes with Jamaica Dance Umbrella on March 6-8 at 7:30 pm at the Centre. The event features several dance companies such as: NDTC, Movements Dance Company and Stella Maris.  The cost is $800 per night, season tickets $2000 and students $500 each night.

“Accommodating Persons with Disabilities in Higher Education”

The Offices of the Deputy Principal and Special Student Services have organized a Campus Sensitization Symposium titled, “Accommodating Persons with Disabilities in Higher Education.” The Forum takes place on Thursday, March 12, 2009 at 2 pm at the Mona Lions Centre for Students with Special Needs.
