Faculty of Social Sciences Awards Ceremony

The Faculty of Social Sciences Awards Ceremony takes place on Thursday, January 22, 2009 at 5:30 pm at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona. The Awards Ceremony is being held to recognize the outstanding academic performance of students during the 2007/8 academic year.

The Minister of Education, Honourable Andrew Holness will be the guest speaker.

AFJ/Sue Cobb Lecture

Dr. Herbert Gayle, lecturer, Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work will deliver the annual AFJ/ Sue Cobb Lecture titled, “The Potholed Road Ahead: Examining Solutions to Reduce the Murder Rate in Jamaica.” It takes place on Thursday, January 29, 2009 at 5:30 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona. The Lecture is being organized by the University of the West Indies, Mona, American Friends of Jamaica and the Jamaica Fulbright - Humphrey Alumni Association. 

Caribbean Community Pandemic Influenza Workshop

The Minister of National Security, Honourable Trevor McMillan and Minister of Health and Environment, Honourable Rudyard Spencer will bring remarks at the Opening Ceremony of the Caribbean Community Pandemic Influenza Workshop being hosted by the University of the West Indies, Mona on January 20, 2009 at 5 pm at The Ruins, UWI, Mona. The Workshop which is scheduled for January 21-22, 2009 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel is designed to corroborate with interagency and intergovernmental agencies that will be involved in the management of an influenza pandemic crisis across the region.

ICT on the Cutting Edge of Research

The Honourable Bruce Golding, Prime Minister of Jamaica will be the guest speaker at the Opening Ceremony of Research Day 2009. The Ceremony takes place on Thursday, January 29, 2009 at 9 am at the Undercroft. Research Day 2009 is being staged on January 29-30 under the theme, “Information Communication Technologies (ICT) on the Cutting Edge of Research.” The annual Research Day is intended to highlight the research areas of the university and to expose the public to the relevance of the research work done by the Institution. It also provides an environment for knowledge sharing.

UWI, Mona Application Deadline is January 31

The University of the West Indies Mona application deadline for its Undergraduate programmes is January 31, 2009.  Interested persons wishing to apply for programmes offered at the Mona Campus or the Western Jamaica Campus may apply online free of cost at http://apps.mona.uwi.edu/onlineapp/  For additional information on the programme offerings interested individuals may visit the website at: http://www.mona.uwi.edu/admissions/

Learn a Foreign Language in 2009

The Department of Modern Languages, UWI, Mona is offering short, non-credit courses in Spanish and French between February 2 and April 5, 2009. Spanish is taught on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 pm -7:30 pm while French is taught on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30 pm-7:30 pm.

The cost is J$8,500 per course and the registration fee is J$300.

Archaeology Dig Targets Slave Village Site at Papine

The first weeks of 2009 will see a team of visiting and local archaeologists investigating the site of the old slave village at the Papine Estate, now part of the University of the West Indies, Mona. The dig will also incorporate a Field School for archaeology students at the UWI.

Earthquake Awareness Week

January 11-17, has been designated National Earthquake Awareness Week, this year’s theme is “Earthquakes have no season, do your part, be earthquake smart.” In keeping with this, the UWI, Mona Campus through the Safety and Emergency Management Unit has organized several events to sensitize and prepare the campus community for earthquakes.

Public Lecture

Dr. Steve A. McClain, Associate Professor of Dermatology, State University of New York (SUNY), Long Island, New York, will deliver a public lecture on Monday, January 19, 2009 at 10 am at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre, located at the University Hospital of the West Indies. His lecture is titled, “No One Should Die of Malignant Melanoma” The lecture is organized by the Department of Pathology, UWI, Mona.

Research Day 2009

Research Day 2009 will take place at the UWI, Mona Campus January 29-30, 2009 under the theme, “Information Communication Technologies (ICT): Enabling Cutting Edge Research. Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Hon. Bruce Golding, will be the guest speaker at the Opening Ceremony which will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2009 at 9 am at the Undercroft.
