Protect Your WhatsApp
Bad actors can gain full access to your WhatsApp if you share your verification code. Recent scams ask for the code, claiming it's for a vote or contest, often sent from a compromised account. Once shared, scammers take over your account and message your contacts asking for money or personal information.
Stay alert as similar scams also appear on Instagram, Facebook Messenger, and Telegram.
- Turn on Two-Step Verification: Create a PIN that only you know. Go to Settings > Account > 2-Step Verification > Enable.
- Add a Recovery Email: Add your email under two-step verification so you can recover your account if locked out.
- Never Share Verification Codes: No legitimate person or service will ever ask for your login code - not even WhatsApp.
- Stay Alert for Impersonation: If you get an urgent message or a request for help, verify through another method before responding.
Use these steps not only for WhatsApp - but for any app that supports Two-Step Verification.
