Cybersecurity Awareness Month - Week 4 - Backup Your Data

TIP 1 - What is Ransomware?

In today’s digital society, our files, research, and records are valuable digital assets and maintaining their availability is a key pillar of cybersecurity.

Ransomware threatens that by locking your data and demanding payment to restore access. It often spreads through phishing emails, unsafe downloads, or infected attachments.

PROTECT YOURSELF!

  • Think before you click links or attachments.
  • Keep your systems and antivirus software updated.
  • Back up your data regularly.

Your files may be gone for good …ONCE RANSOMWARE STRIKES – UNLESS YOU HAVE A BACKUP.

TIP 2 - Save it Before You Lose it

When data is lost to ransomware, system failure, or theft, recovery depends on one thing — your backup.

Regularly backing up your files protects your work and keeps critical University information available when it matters most.

BEST PRACTICES

  • Store Smart: Use approved University storage platforms such as OneDrive, Teams, SharePoint, or your departmental Network Share for all official files.
  • Avoid Personal Storage for University Data: Do not use personal USB drives or personal cloud accounts (e.g., Dropbox, Google Drive) for University work.
  • Ensure Redundancy and Recovery: Keep multiple copies of critical files in separate, approved locations. Use versioning features in OneDrive or SharePoint to recover from accidental deletions or unwanted edits.

All it takes to lose everything….IS A SINGLE POINT OF FAILURE.
