Cybersecurity Awarness Month - Week 1 - Strong Passphrases

The UWI Mona, Security and Network Operations Centre (SNOC) team recognises October as cybersecurity awareness month under the theme "Stay Safe Online - Protect Yourself; Protect UWI".

Week 1 - Lock it Down with Strong Passphrases

  1. Use Long, Unique Passphrases for every account

A passphrase is like a password, but longer and easier to remember, such as a short sentence or a mix of random words.

A longer passphrase is harder for hackers to guess or crack. Aim for at least 12-16 characters.

Avoid using common words, names, or predictable patterns like Password123 or your birthday.

  2. Use a Password Manager to Keep Them Safe

Password managers create and store strong, random passwords for you.

  3. Use New Passwords for each account

If you reuse passwords, one hacked account could put all your accounts at risk.

Unique passwords help contain breaches--if one site is compromised, the others remain secure.

Think of it like having a different key for every lock on your house!

Your password is your first defense. Make it count!
