Focus on Primary Education: The UWI/USAID Primary Education Project

Abstract: 

The Primary Education Project which resulted and which started operation in mid-1980 has as its basic objective the improvement of the learning environment for primary pupils aged 7-11+ years, a related purpose being to strengthen UWI assistance to territories in their efforts to improve educational programmes.
Nine territories have to date agreed to participate in the curriculum development aspect, viz: Antigua, Barbados, Belize, British Virgin Islands, Montserrat, Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Kitts/Nevis and St. Vincent and the Grenadines and these, together with Jamaica, are also involved in the Educaüon Administration and Supervision programme.
The curriculum aspect of the Project focuses attenüon on four subject areas: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies, and of the nine territories concerned, all have opted for Language Arts, eight for Mathematics, four for Science and five for Social Studies — three options generally being available to each territory.
