Abstract:

In discussing the type of research which is needed in the area of education and development in the "new nations" it should be noted that the concept "development" is an amorphous one and usually implies changes in many institutions of a society including the economic. One of the development goals for a particular nation might be to produce a greater sense of national solidarity among the various disparate groups that belong to the nation state; for another, it might be the equalization of job opportunities for those in the different social strata or the different ethnic groups which make up the society. All these aspects of development are important and research aimed at throwing light on the contribution which education can make towards the achievement of these development goals would undoubtedly be of great value to these societies.
