Abstract:

The Caribbean Poetry Project (CPP) is a collaboration between The University of the West Indies (UWI), and the University of Cambridge, that has been running from 2010 to 2015. It began with a recognition that with all the changes in the UK’s literature curriculum, Caribbean poetry was not getting the exposure it deserved. In the case of the Caribbean there was exposure, but from experience with the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), our teachers were not always comfortable teaching poetry and were certainly not maximizing its considerable potential to engage students productively. The purpose of the project was to address these issues, with the overarching aim of raising the profile of Caribbean poetry through maximum exposure directed towards promoting achievement through learning and teaching Caribbean poetry in schools in the Caribbean and UK, whilst carrying out joint research.
