Abstract:

This article examines the issue of funding of population activities in the Caribbean generally and the international funding of sexual and reproductive health programs in particular. The paper notes that, as a result of the successful management of population problems, many Caribbean countries have been slated for reduced international funding, especially from the IPPF. The article argues that declining international funding for population activities could be detrimental to the Region's control of population problems, and presents a case for maintaining international funding of population activities in the Caribbean. The article argues and concludes that the emerging issues of population aging and HIV/AIDS, the prevalence of high levels of teenage pregnancies, the inability of many governments to provide the shortfall from the decline in international funding and the need for sustainability underscore the need to maintain international funding of Caribbean family planning programs.
