Abstract:

The St. Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) has recently published several well regarded collections of conference papers which reflect new and emerging positions in literary and cultural criticism. Since 2000, four important collections have appeared either as books or as special editions of Caribbean journals: Caribbean Literature in a Global Context edited by Funso Ayejina and Paula Morgan, from the conference of the same name, and a collection of papers presented to celebrate Earl Lovelace's 70th birthday, were both published in 2005, and papers from the symposium to celebrate the work of V.S. Naipaul were published in 2007. Beyond Borders: Cross Culturalism and the Caribbean Canon, a selection of papers from a conference hosted by the Department of Liberal Arts at UWI St. Augustine in January 2004, continues this successful practice.
