Teachers’ Commitment to Promoting Education for Sustainable Development: Outcomes of a Faculty Collaborative Action Research Project

The Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Working Group (consisting of teacher educators within the School of Education at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus in Jamaica), conducted a collaborative action research project to infuse ESD skills, issues, perspectives, and values into six courses. The study explored students’ views on the role of teachers in promoting ESD, their personal commitment to ESD, and whether these views were influenced by the infusion process.

About five years after the completion of the Lesotho Environmental Education Support Project (LEESP), a small-scale qualitative study was undertaken to explore appropriate Environmental Education (EE) pedagogy drawing some lessons from LEESP and EE practice in the UK. LEESP set out to establish ‘action competence’ among learners in primary and secondary schools, in response to intensifying environmental problems in Lesotho.

Sandwatch: A Practical Issue-based Action-oriented Approach to ESD

Recognizing that Caribbean beaches are under stress and degrading as a result of natural and man-made forces, Sandwatch started in 1998 with the vision of changing the lifestyle and habits of children, youth and adults on a community-wide basis, and developing awareness of the fragile nature of the marine and coastal environment and the need to use it wisely. Inquiry and Participatory Action Research in Primary School

In Jamaica, learner-centered instruction is commended for teaching a curriculum focused on environmental education and sustainable development. This study investigated the potential of participatory action research (PAR) as an inquiry-based instructional method in a sixth-grade Jamaican classroom. Mixed methods compared the academic performance of students between teacher-led and PAR-driven groups, and analyzed key attributes of sustainable development.
