This study tested the equivalence classification hypothesis, which claims that in learning a second/foreign language ‘new’ sounds are more easily mastered than ‘similar’ ones. Participants included 49 speakers of St Lucian French Creole (SLFC) and St Lucian English Creole (SLEC), all secondary school students studying French as a foreign language, and a control group of 11 Martiniquan French speakers.

Teachers’ pedagogical beliefs and their influence on grammar instruction has long been a controversial issue. For the present study a sample of Caribbean university instructors (n=10) of foreign language were consulted through questionnaires and open-ended interviews to investigate potential links between their fundamental pedagogical beliefs and the teaching strategies they chose to apply as they taught undergraduate students of a foreign language.

The Dictionary of Caribbean English Usage (DCEU) is accompanied by a Multilingual Supplement in English, French and Spanish. The Supplement is a listing of approximately 30 pages of bilingual equivalents to Caribbean English items of flora and fauna. It represents organized preliminary work done towards providing an easily accessible standard reference for such equivalents for Caribbean foreign-language students both at the secondary and tertiary levels as well as for teachers and researchers in this area.
