Street Law Caribbean was formally launched at 5:00 p.m. on 6 June 2016 in the Faculty of Law at Mona, The University of the West Indies. Professor David McQuoid Mason, President of the Commonwealth Legal Eduation Association and Professor of Law, Centre for Socio-legal Studies, University of KwaZuluNatal, Durban, South Africa was the Guest Speaker at the Launch. His presentation was entitled “Street Law in South Africa and beyond”. Registration commenced at 4:30 p.m.
In addition, during the week of June 6, other activities hosted included a Regional Ed O’Brien Memorial Conference (Ed O’Brien was the Founder of Street Law, now deceased). The Conference was entitled “Taking Law to the Streets: A Best Practice Workshop”, from June 7-8. Conference presenters included: Professor McQuoid Mason; Ms Lindi Coetzee, Director, Street Law from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, South Africa; Mrs. Indera Persaud, Norman Manley Law School; and Mrs Michele Small-Bartley, Senior Director, Youth and Adolescent Policy Division, MOEYI. Conference activities commenced at 8:30 am each day. Early registration was required.
There was a Public Lecture at 5:00 pm on June 8, 2016, presented by Street Law Caribbean in collaboration with the Continuing Legal Professional Development Committee, General Legal Council for Jamaica. It was in tribute to the Honourable Mr. Justice Roy Anderson, CD, retired Judge of the Revenue Court and Adjunct Lecturer, UWI Faculty of Law at Mona. Adv. Mohamed Ameermia, Commissioner at the South African Human Rights Commission, was Guest Lecturer. His lecture was entitled: “Advancing the Economic Rights Agenda—Emerging Trending and Lessons from South Africa”. Registration for the Public Lecture commenced at 4:30 pm. MLIU has applied for, and expect to receive, CLPD accreditation for the Public Lecture. Applicants for CLPD Credits was required to pay a fee of J$4 000.
