Message from the Head of Department

The Department of Medicine in its mission of excellence continues to train modern, exceptional clinicians using innovative patient-centered research and delivering empathetic patient care. Historically the department has a strong foundation in clinical medicine and research, and we continue to encourage staff and students to produce and publish impactful work while we train the future health care providers of the nation and the region. The department continues to host and offer continuous medical education to meet the needs of the region, through lectures and symposiums offered in collaboration with our international colleagues. We aim to enrich the minds of our junior clinicians through the various Doctor of Medicine (DM) and Fellowship programmes offered by the department. We are committed to the service of the region and so our outreach work continues with several of our staff being involved in government and non-governmental organizations.

Academic Programmes

Undergraduate Overview

The teaching of the clinical clerkships in the Department of Medicine consists mainly of small group interactive teachings with an emphasis on patient management and problem-oriented learning. These include ward rounds, patient-based and problem- oriented teaching and learning activities. In addition to the small group bedside teaching there are scheduled teachings to students at the different hospital sites daily.

Postgraduate Overview

The DM postgraduate programme in Medicine continues to train specialists in Internal Medicine for Jamaica and the Caribbean for over forty years without specific funding for the programme. The success of the programme has been dependent on the commitment of the staff to training postgraduate students.
