Dr. Shazeeda Ali

UWI, Class of 1991

WELCOME, ALUMNI

Dean's Message

MonaLaw is proud of our alumni and in an effort to foster close connections with them, the MonaLaw Alumni Office was established in March 2019. This Office has facilitated the establishment of the Mona:aw Alumni Association ("MAA") which has both local and overseas membership.

In order to encourage the culture of "giving back" the MonaLaw Alumni Office worked in tandem with MAA to launch the MonaLaw Alumni Award at this year's annual faculty students awards ceremony. All the funds for this prize were raised by our  generous Alumni. MonaLaw is grateful and look forward to greater collaboration with our graduates.

How did your MonaLaw experience prepare you for career?

Trishanner Pitter

"The Faculty experience highlighted the disparity between academia and practice but it fostered discipline and proper time management which is vital especially when you begin working"

Trishann Pitter

"I  currently practice Commercial and being at the Faculty, particularly in third year developed my passion for this area of law.  The passion became stronger when I interned at JAMPRO.  Yeah, there was Criminal Law that was interesting but my main area of focus was always commercial law".

MonaLaw Brief History

.

.

.

Founding Years

The Faculty of Law was established at The University of the West Indies in 1970 with headquarters at the Cave Hill Campus. At the Mona Campus, 5 first-year courses were taught in a few classrooms in the Faculty of Arts and General Studies (now called the Faculty of Humanities & Education)

A New Home

In 2011, the Faculty opened a permanent state-of-the-art building at 1–3 West Road, with multimedia equipment in the classrooms, a student lounge, a fountain and a two-storey library. This is the building that all law students now call their home away from home.

Future Plans

Currently, the Faculty of Law has over 600 students enrolled with 17 full-time lecturers, 8 adjunct lecturers, 8 administrative members and 2 ancillary workers. Fifty-four courses are taught for the Bachelor of Laws programme.

The MonaLaw Alumni Association (MAA)

The purpose of the  MonaLaw Alumni Association is to promote the general welfare of the organisation and foster the spirit of loyalty. The association's goal is to strengthen ties with graduates and support members' professional development. The association will foster networking opportunities, career building, promote giving back and offer benefits to its members.

We will reach out to you our colleagues for  support and involvement as, we promote the welfare of a good legal family.
