MONA ACADEMIC CONFERENCE 2005 – “TOURISM: THE DRIVER OF CHANGE IN THE JAMAICAN ECONOMY?’’

The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus will once again host the Mona Academic Conference from Friday, August 26 to Sunday August 28, coinciding with the start of the 2005/2006 academic year. This year’s conference is being held under the theme, “Tourism: The Driver of Change in the Jamaican Economy?”

Normal operations resume at the UWI, Mona Campus - Monday, July 18, 2005

The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus wishes to advise that the Campus will operate normally on Monday, July 18, 2005 and that classes and examinations will be held as scheduled. Also, administrative offices and other services will be open for business tomorrow (Monday, July 18, 2005) at the usual times.

SEWAGE TREATEMENT AT UWI, MONA SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT

The University is surprised at the statement that it discharges raw sewage into drains. The UWI, Mona Campus Sewage Treatment Plant located at the intersection of Hermitage and Escarpment Roads in Hermitage processes approximately 400,000 gallons of sewage daily from the University and the University Hospital.

Treatment at the facility aims at meeting the standard for Sewage Plant effluent set by the National Environment & Planning Agency (NEPA).

Classes postponed on the Mona Campus - Friday, July 8.

The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus wishes to further advise that classes will not resume today, Friday, July 8, as indicated in an earlier release. This decision has been taken because of the transportation difficulties being experienced by some of our students in the aftermath of Hurricane Dennis. However, classes will resume at the Mona Campus on Monday, July 11, 2005.

Administrative Offices and other services will remain open until 4:30 p.m. today.

MONA CAMPUS TO CLOSE DUE TO HURRICANE THREAT

Owing to the threat posed by Hurricane Dennis, all classes at the Mona Campus of The University of the West Indies will be suspended for today except for examinations. The campus will close at 1:00 p.m. today, Wednesday July 6, 2005 and will remain closed tomorrow in the event weather conditions do not permit re-opening.

F&GPC DECISIONS FROM MEETING OF WEDNESDAY, MAY 25, 2005

Establishment of Four New Centres
Finance and General Purposes Committee (F&GPC), Mona at its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 agreed in principle to the establishment of four new Centres:
- The Caribbean Competitiveness Centre
- The Centre for Studies in Public Safety and Justice
- The Mona Ageing and Wellness Centre
- The Leadership and Governance Centre

CARLOS ESCOFFERY PROMOTED TO PROFESSOR

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Carlos Escoffery, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medical Sciences, at the Mona Campus, to the post of Professor.

DAVID BARKER PROMOTED TO PROFESSOR

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. David Barker, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geography and Geology in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences at The University of the West Indies Mona Campus, to the rank of Professor.
Professor Barker holds the Bachelor of Science Degree in Geography and Economics from the University College Wales, Aberystwyth (1968), the Diploma in Urban and Regional Studies from the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies, University of Birmingham, and the Doctor of Philosophy in Geography from the University of Bristol.

HORACE FLETCHER PROMOTED TO PROFESSOR

The University of the West Indies (UWI) is pleased to announce the promotion of Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Child Health Dr. Horace Fletcher to the rank of Professor.

Professor Fletcher, a Jamaican and past student of Hastings Primary and Cornwall College, holds the Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Sciences and went on to obtain the Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery degree as well as the Doctor of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from The University of the West Indies.

JOHN LENNARD APPOINTED PROFESSOR OF BRITISH AND AMERICAN LITERATURE

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. John Lennard as Professor of British and American Literature in the Department of Literatures in English at the Mona Campus.

A British national, Professor Lennard holds the Bachelor of Arts degree with double first-class honours from Oxford University, where he was at New College; the Master of Arts degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri and the Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) from Oxford.
