ANTHONY HARRIOTT PROMOTED TO PROFESSOR

The University of the West Indies (UWI) is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Anthony Harriott, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Government, Faculty of Social Sciences, Mona to the post of Professor of Political Sociology.

IAN BOXILL PROMOTED TO PROFESSOR

The University of the West Indies (UWI) is pleased to announce the promotion of Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work, Faculty of Social Sciences, Mona, Dr. Ian Boxill, to the position of Professor of Comparative Sociology.

STATEMENT ON SECURITY INCIDENT ON THE CAMPUS ON APRIL 4, 2006.

The Mona Police report that on Tuesday, April 4, 2006, at about 2:00p.m., a 22-year old man of a Kingston 11 address was escorted to the Station by UWI Campus Security. It was alleged that he was accused by a student of peeping on him in a toilet in the Faculty of Pure & Applied Sciences. He claimed that he went to the University Hospital to get a job and was walking through the campus to get a bus. He was escorted off the Campus by the police and warned not to return unless he had legitimate business.

UWI NEUROSURGEON AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS BRAAKMAN PRIZE

Neurosurgeon and Chief Resident at the University Hospital of the West Indies, Dr. Roger Eyon Hunter has been named joint recipient of the prestigious Braakman Diploma /Prize by the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) for being the best candidate at the Oral Part Two Examination of the EANS Examination in Neurosurgery.

ELSA LEO-RHYNIE TO ADDRESS UWI’S COMMEMORATION DINNER

The Governor General, H.E. the Most Hon. Kenneth Hall, has advised that due to an obligation which he must meet consequent on his appointment to the post, he will be unable to deliver the main address at the 2006 Commemoration Dinner in honour of Professor the Hon. Leslie Robinson to be held on Friday, February 24 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre.

As a result of this unavailability, Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the UWI, Mona Campus, Professor Elsa Leo-Rhynie has kindly agreed to be the keynote speaker at the event.

Vice Chancellor's Statement re Appointment of PVC Undergraduate Studies

I am pleased to announce that Professor Marlene Hamilton will be appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Board for Undergraduate Studies to replace Professor Elsa Leo-Rhynie.

STATEMENT FROM Professor E. Nigel Harris,Vice Chancellor of The University of the West Indies

I am pleased to announce that Professor Elsa Leo-Rhynie has been appointed as interim Principal of The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, effective February 15, 2006 until July 31, 2007. Professor Elsa Leo-Rhynie has had a distinguished career as an educator and as an administrator in higher education. She joined the University of the West Indies in 1977, first as Senior Research Fellow then as Senior Lecturer in Educational Psychology in the Faculty of Education and was promoted to Professor in November 1991.

Conference in honour of Barry Chevannes - January 19-21

The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work in collaboration with the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of the West Indies, will be hosting a conference in honour of Professor Barrington Chevannes’ lifetime scholarly work, service and achievement. The conference is scheduled to be held at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre on Thursday, January 19 to Saturday 21, 2006.

Closing date for Application to UWI

The closing date for application to full-time undergraduate degree programmes at the UWI, Mona Campus is Friday, January 13, 2006.

Persons are reminded that supporting documents in the original as well as a copy must be presented with the application forms. Online applicants should submit their documents and the letter of acknowledgement.
A processing fee of $450 is applicable for paper applications.

F&GPC DECISIONS FROM MEETING OF MONDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2005

Enhancement of Regional Nature of UWI, Mona
As part of an effort to enhance the academic development of students in the UWI 12, that is, the non-campus countries, as well as to bring together more students from across the region to study and interact together at a campus, Finance and General Purposes Committee (F&GPC) Mona, at its monthly meeting on Monday, November 28, 2005 supported in principle a proposal to provide some 20 undergraduate scholarships for students wishing to study at Mona. At least one scholarship is to be provided for each of the countries which comprise the UWI 12.
