New Public Orator

This is to advise that Professor Brian Meeks of the Department of Government has kindly accepted the Vice Chancellor’s invitation to serve as Public Orator of the Mona Campus and has been appointed in this capacity for three years, with effect from August 1, 2006.

Social History Project Exhibition –“History of Cricket in Jamaica, 1870 to Present”

The National Library of Jamaica, 12 East Street, Kingston will host the Social History Project’s exhibition, “A History of Cricket in Jamaica, 1870 to the Present”. The Exhibition will be launched on October 8, 2006 at the National Library of Jamaica by Mr. James Carnegie, well known Sports Historian and Project Development Officer with the National Independence Park Limited and will be open to the public between October 9 and December 20, 2006.

UWI SOCIOLOGIST DR. LEITH DUNN NAMED TO COMMONWEALTH OBSERVER GROUP FOR ZAMBIA ELECTIONS

UWI sociologist and international development consultant, Dr Leith Dunn, has been named a member of the Commonwealth Observer Group for the Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government Elections to be held in Zambia this month.

Thirty-One win prestigious UWI Open Scholarship

The University of the West Indies has awarded its prestigious Open Scholarships to thirty-one students from throughout the region who will commence studies at one of the three campuses in the 2006/2007 academic year. The awards have been given based on performance at the UWI Open Scholarship Examinations in March this year.

PRINCIPAL MEETS WITH IRVINE HALL MEMBERS

The Principal of The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus and other members of the University Administration met with students at the Irvine Hall of Residence this afternoon, Monday, August 28, 2006 to discuss matters related to the incident which occurred on the Hall on Sunday, August 27, 2006 and which resulted in the wounding of a female student on the Hall.

The University has been informed that the student was attacked by a visitor who was a guest of hers, under circumstances which could not have been avoided by any security measures which the institution has in place.

UWI OPENS FOR NEW ACADEMIC YEAR TODAY, AUGUST 27, 2006

Given the improvement in the weather conditions, The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus is asking all staff and students to report to the Campus for the start of the new academic year.

Should the situation change adversely, the University will issue a further statement.

ADVISORY IN RELATION TO TROPICAL STORM ERNESTO

In light of the impending approach of Tropical Storm Ernesto, The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus is requesting that students who were scheduled to take up residence on campus for the start of the new academic year, delay doing so until further notice.

Students who are already in residence on campus have already received instructions from the Student Services Managers of the respective Halls regarding the arrangements being made for their accommodation on campus during the storm.

Writing Life: Reflections of West Indian Writers

“Writing Life: Reflections of West Indian Writers” is the theme of the 2006 Mona Academic Conference which takes place at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus August 25-27 . The conference will bring together a significant number of poets, writers of fiction and playwrights who have been part of the UWI community, for readings, discussions and other presentations so that the public may become aware of the volume and range of creative writing by UWI-related writers.

The University of the West Indies (UWI) is tremendously saddened by the passing of Jamaica’s national treasure and cultural icon, the Hon. Louise Bennett Coverly, affectionately known as “Miss Lou’ on whom it conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters in 1982 in recognition of this ‘poet, public servant and patriot’.

UWI, KNOX COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO SIGN MOU JULY 31

The University of the West Indies and Knox Community College will sign a Memorandum of Understanding to enable the College to deliver UWI’s Bachelor of Science (generic) Nursing (BScN) programme in the academic year 2006/2007 on Monday, July 31, 2006 at 10 a.m. at the office of the Director of the School of Continuing Studies at the UWI, Mona Campus.
