PHYLLIS COATES-BECKFORD APPOINTED PROFESSOR

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Phyllis Coates-Beckford Senior Lecturer in the Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences to the rank of Professor.

Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence

The Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence for the 2004/2005 academic year will go to five members of the academic staff based at the Mona and St Augustine campuses of The University of the West Indies. At Mona, the awardees are Professor Michael Branday of the Department of Surgery, Radiology, Anaesthetics and Intensive Care in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, for Teaching; Professor Rainford Wilks, of the Tropical Medicine Research Institute for Research Accomplishments and Professor Edwin Jones of the Department of Government, Faculty of Social Sciences, for Public Service.

CLOSER CARICOM/UWI RELATIONS ADVOCATED

The Secretary-General of CARICOM, Mr Edwin Carrington proposed, during the annual business meeting of the Council of the University of the West Indies held on Friday, April 8, 2005 at Mona, that the two regional institutions cooperate more closely in seeking to enhance the development of the English-speaking Caribbean region.

COUNCIL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING 2005

On Friday, April 8, the Council of the University of the West Indies, chaired by the Chancellor Sir George Alleyne, tackled a 25-item agenda covering financial, strategic and operational as well as governance matters. The future development of the regional institution was the primary focus of a presentation by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nigel Harris who was making his first appearance in that capacity before the UWI’s highest body.

UWI VICE CHANCELLOR’S XI VS. SOUTH AFRICA

In celebration of UWI Vice Chancellor’s Cricket Week, former West Indian wicket keeper Ridley Jacobs will lead the Vice Chancellor’s XI against South Africa on April 16th and 17th 2005 at the Sir Frank Worrell Memorial Cricket Grounds, UWI, St. Augustine. The week’s activities will also include a lecture on The Future of West Indies Cricket and A Tribute to Sir Frank Worrell, as well as the launch of a book that takes a retrospective look at West Indies cricket.

VICE CHANCELLOR E. NIGEL HARRIS OUTLINES VISION FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES

In a presentation to the annual business meeting of the Council of the University of the West Indies the newly installed Vice Chancellor, Professor Eon Nigel Harris, outlined his vision for the University as being the institution of first choice for Caribbean nationals seeking quality higher education, as being the first in creating new knowledge through research and as the port of first call for Caribbean governments needing advice and technical expertise for policy development, strategic planning and programme implementation.

UWI TO HOST STUDENT LEADERS’ DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR

Finance and General Purposes Committee (F&GPC) Mona has agreed to the implementation of a one-week training seminar for Student Leaders. This will be a pilot activity which, if successful, will inform the development of an Institute for Student Leaders which would recruit potential Caribbean leaders and nurture their development.

UWI students on New York study tour

Seven students who are members of a new “Methods of Policy Practice” course designed by
University of the West Indies Lecturer in Social Work, Peta-Anne Baker, recently took part in a
one-week study tour to New York City and Hartford, Connecticut.

F&GPC, MONA TO RECOMMEND REVIEW OF REGISTRATION POLICY

Finance and General Purposes Committee (F&GPC) Mona has agreed to recommend that the University Council consider permitting full time as well as part time students in the Faculties of Humanities and Education, Pure and Applied Sciences and Social Sciences to pay per credit for all courses taken as part of the degree programme. F&GPC, Mona is also recommending that Council review the policy governing the relationship between full or part-time registration and the calculation of fees.

The Most Hon Edward Seaga and the UWI

The University of the West Indies takes this opportunity to advise that The Most Honourable Edward Philip George Seaga, former Leader of the Opposition in Jamaica, has accepted an invitation to serve as Honorary Distinguished Fellow at the Professorial level in the School for Graduate Studies and Research upon his retirement from active politics.
