STATEMENT RE DEATH OF HUGH LAWSON SHEARER

The Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Professor the Honourable Rex Nettleford, received the news of the death of The Most Honourable Hugh Lawson Shearer while attending the meeting of the CARICOM Heads of Government in Grenada and delivered the following statement, on behalf of the University.

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Joseph Frederick, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Child Health, Faculty of Medical Sciences, at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus and Director of the Advanced Fertility and Research Management Unit at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI), to the rank of Professor of Reproductive Medicine, with effect from May 20, 2004.

A new scholarship in Primary Education valued at some two hundred and forty thousand
Jamaican dollars (J$240,000) over two years, will be offered at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, beginning in the 2004-2005 academic year.
The scholarship has been donated by the Jamaica Committee, a U.S. based, not for profit corporation, comprised of Jamaicans and lovers of Jamaica who are committed to helping provide the people of Jamaica with a better life.

$700,000.00 Gift for UWI Cable & Wireless and Nortel Networks Partner to Provide UWI Mona with Advanced Communications Networ

Nortel Networks and Cable & Wireless Jamaica have partnered to provide the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies with an advanced wireless local area network and related security system, valued at some J$700,000.00.
The official handing over of the equipment took place at the offices of the UWI’s Management Information Technology Services (MITS) on Thursday, May 27.
Minimal Access Surgery in Children focus of 3rd William Dennis Memorial Lecture

The Third Annual William Dennis Memorial Lecture will be held on June 8, 2004 at 6:00 p.m. in the Main Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Medicine, University Hospital of the West Indies. The Lecture on “Minimal Access Surgery in Children” will be delivered by Dr. Jacob Langer, Chief of Paediatric Surgery, Toronto Sick Children’s Hospital, Canada. Prof. Langer is also the Department of Surgery’s 2004 External Examiner for the DM (Paediatric Surgery) exams.
The Centre for Caribbean Thought Honours Stuart Hall

The Centre for Caribbean Thought at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona will honour Jamaican-born Stuart Hall in the Third Caribbean Reasonings to be held on the Mona Campus on June 17-19, 2004. The conference will be held under the theme “Culture, Politics, Race and Diaspora: The Thought of Stuart Hall”. Prof. Stuart Hall is an internationally renowned scholar best known for his contribution to cultural studies, political thought, film and media studies and critical theory.
