CARIBBEAN REASONINGS IN HONOUR OF STUART HALL

The Centre for Caribbean Thought, The University of the West Indies (UWI) will hold the 3rd Caribbean Reasonings on June 17-19, 2004 at UWI, Mona under the theme ‘Culture, Politics, Race and Diaspora: The Thought of Stuart Hall’.
MONATS Elects New Executive Council

At its Annual General Meeting held on Thursday May 13, 2004, the Mona
Administrative and Technical Staff Association (MONATS), formerly MONASA, elected a new Executive body to serve for a period of one year. Mr. Patrick Thwaites was re-elected President for a third consecutive term. New Officers elected by the membership include Vice-President, Miss Nolda Thompson; Secretary, Ms. Cecelia Ferguson; and Assistant Secretary, Mrs. Annett Allison-Beckford.
SEVEN RECEIVE VICE CHANCELLOR’S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE

The Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence for 2004 has been awarded to six members of the academic staff based at the Cave Hill, Mona and St. Augustine Campuses of The University of the West Indies as well as the Instructional Development Unit at the St. Augustine Campus in Trinidad.
Danticat, Dash and Walcott for UWI, St. Augustine Haitian Conference

Several world-renowned scholars and artists will take part in the Haitian Bicentenary Conference, which will be held from June 15-18th, 2004 at The University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine Campus. Entitled Re- Interpreting the Haitian Revolution, the Conference’s speakers will include critically acclaimed novelist Edwidge Danticat, scholars Lloyd Best, Michael Dash and Dany Laferrière, UWI Vice Chancellor Rex Nettleford and Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott, among others.

Hundreds of students of African descent from around the world are expected to attend the 16th All African Students’ Conference (AASC) to be held at the University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona Campus May 20-22, 2004. The theme of the Conference will be “The Bicentenary of Haitian Independence and the Historical Significance of the Haitian Revolution; Prospects, Possibilities and Perspectives”.

Over Six Hundred (600) participants have already registered for the Annual Nursing Midwifery Conference and Mary Seivwright Day being organized by the Department of Advanced Nursing Education (DANE), University of the West Indies (UWI), for May 13 & 14, 2004 on the Mona Campus. The theme of the conference is “Nurses Challenging Health Issues Through Research”.
MAYO CLINIC DONATES SUPPLIES TO DEPT. OF MEDICINE

The care and treatment of Diabetes by the Department of Medicine at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus has been significantly enhanced with the Department’s recent receipt of a first consignment of medical and educational supplies and equipment from the Department of Medicine and Division of Endocrinology of the Mayo Clinic and members of the Minnesota Chapter of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.

The Council of the University of the West Indies at its annual business session on Friday, April 23, 2004 chaired by the newly appointed Chancellor, Sir George Alleyne, paid tribute to the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Professor the Honourable Rex Nettleford, who will retire on September 30, 2004, after serving six years as head of the regional institution, culminating a career of nearly 50 years at the University of the West Indies. His successor, Professor E. Nigel Harris, who was appointed by the Council in December, 2003 was present at the meeting.
RHODES TRUST ESTABLISHES REX NETTLEFORD PRIZE IN CULTURAL STUDIES

The governing Council of The University of the West Indies (UWI) has approved a proposal from the Rhodes Trust to establish in the Caribbean the Rex Nettleford Prize in Cultural Studies, on a permanent basis, tenable at the UWI. The Prize was proposed by the Rhodes Trustees as an appropriate way to mark the centenary of the Rhodes Scholarships in the Caribbean. It is intended to honour Professor Nettleford’s contribution to higher education and to the cultural life of the Caribbean, and to nurture talent in the Caribbean in these areas.
