SYMPOSIUM ON “UWI SHAPING THE FUTURE OF OUR HUMAN RESOURCES”

The role of the University of the West Indies (UWI) in developing human capital in the region will be the focus of a symposium for employers, educators and students scheduled for Thursday, February 26 at the Undercroft of the Senate Building on the Mona campus. Increasing globalisation and the dynamics of the world of work pose challenges to educators, and the UWI in particular, in attempting to meet the complexities of job market requirements.

UWI STUDENTS URGED TO EXPLORE INDIAN, AFRICAN CONNECTION

One of Jamaica’s leading Cultural Icons is appealing to students at the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies to acknowledge the important connection between the Indian and African races.

The call was issued by Mrs. Amina Blackwood-Meeks, storyteller and communication specialist on Thursday (January 5), while delivering the feature address at the 2nd annual Rex Nettleford Hall Dinner.

UWI, MONA AND ALUMNI TO HONOUR NETTLEFORD DURING COMMEMORATION CELEBRATIONS 2004

Vice Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford will be honoured by the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus and its alumni during the institution’s annual Commemoration Celebrations and Alumni Week to be held over the period February 13 – 21, 2004 at Mona.

16TH ANNUAL NURSING MIDWIFERY RESEARCH

“Nurses Challenging Health Issues Through Research” is the theme of the 16th Annual Nursing Midwifery Research Conference and Mary Seivwright Day to be held by the Department of Advanced Nursing Education, University of the West Indies (UWI) at the Hilton Kingston Hotel, May 13 & 14, 2004.

The highlight of this conference will be the launch of the Mary Seivwright Distinguished Nursing Research Lecture by Dr. Carol Baxter, Professor of Nursing at the School of Health and Social Sciences and Head of the Centre for Nursing and Midwifery Research and Development, Middlesex University.

International Focus on Accrediting Jamaican Social Workers

The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work will be one of three sponsors of a one-day seminar entitled, “Social Work Accreditation: Improving and Strengthening the Profession”, on Tuesday, January 20, 2004 on the UWI Mona campus. The other sponsors are the International Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW) and the Jamaica Association of Social Workers (JASW). Mr. Victor Cummings, Member of Parliament, will speak at the opening exercise scheduled for 9 a.m. in the Executive Lecture Theatre, Mona School of Business.

RESTORING TRUST IN CORPORATIONS

The second Carreras-UWI Distinguished Lecture, Restoring Trust in Corporations: Leadership and Corporate Governance, was delivered at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre recently by Professor Patrick M. Wright, the Professor of Human Resource Studies at the Centre for Advanced Human Resource Studies, Cornell University.

NEW VICE CHANCELLOR FOR THE UWI

The Council of the University of the West Indies, at an extraordinary session held at the Sherbourne Centre in Barbados on Saturday, December 13, 2003 appointed Professor Eon Nigel Harris to succeed Professor the Hon Rex Nettleford as Vice Chancellor.

UWI to host Conference on “Regional Governance and Integrated Development”

Prime Minister of Jamaica and Chairman of CARICOM the Most Honourable P. J. Patterson will deliver the feature address at the Opening Ceremony of a CARICOM 30th Anniversary Conference on “Regional Governance and Integrated Development” on Friday, October 17 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI Mona Campus from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Gender Studies In The 21st Century: Perspectives, Visions And Possibilities

The 5th annual Mona Academic Conference to be held from August 29 to 31 at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona will have as its theme Gender in the 21st Century: Perspectives, Visions and Possibilities and will feature a variety of presentations that will serve to challenge or confirm popular theories and beliefs about a range of issues relating to Gender in the Caribbean and other societies.

Medical Students Receive Canadian Scholarships

Four students from the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of the West Indies have been awarded scholarships which will assist them in meeting expenses associated with their academic programme. The students, all members of the Class of 2006, are Mr. Vantario Taylor, Miss Dana Richardson, Mr. Derwin Christmas and Miss Inga Smith. The presentations were made on Thursday, July 31, 2003, at a brief ceremony held at the Faculty
