Three UWI staff members appointed to UN pool of experts on the marine environment

The United Nations has appointed three members of staff at The University of the West Indies, Mona to its Pool of Experts to assist in the production of a World Ocean Assessment – the first integrated global assessment of the state of the marine environment, including socio-economic aspects.

Multi millionaire, Jamaican born, Levi Roots – the man whose ‘reggae reggae’ sauce skyrocketed to success on a popular British TV show - will share insights into his entrepreneurial journey with UWI Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) students on Monday, April 8th.
The motivational talk scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at the MSBM will be based on his book “You can get it if you really want", which chronicles his journey from Clarendon to the United Kingdom. Levi Roots visits UWI Mona on the invitation of the Mona School of Business and Management which will also continue ongoing partnership discussions with the entrepreneur.
Western Jamaica Campus to explore ‘Bad Friday’: the Coral Gardens Incident, Fifty Years Forward

(MONTEGO BAY) APRIL 3, 2013 – AS THE Rastafari Movement continues their commemorative events of the 1963 Coral Gardens incident of holy week, the Western Jamaica Campus of the University of the West Indies and the Rastafari Coral Gardens Committee are collaborating to ensure that the voices of the West are heard by hosting an event entitled “Exploring the Coral Gardens Incident: Fifty Years forward.”
The event will be held on Thursday, April 11, 2013, 5pm-9pm at The University of the West Indies, Mona – Western Jamaica Campus. All are invited to this event which is free of charge.
Contributing governments approve UWI’s 2013-2015 operating budgets

[UWI Regional Headquarters, Jamaica] - The 2013 meetings of the Campus and University Grants Committees (CGC/UGC) were convened on Wednesday 27th March at the Hyatt Regency, Port-of-Spain, Trinidad to discuss budget approvals from contributing governments of UWI’s Biennial Estimates 2013-2014 and 2014-2015, which were presented earlier in the year to respective Technical Advisory Committees (TAC) for consideration.
UWI Mona Faculty of Law places second in regional competition

The three year old Faculty of Law at the University of the West Indies’ Mona campus has scored second place in their first outing at the annual Caribbean Court of Justice Moot Court Competition in Trinidad and Tobago.
The first place slot went to the Hugh Wooding Law School of Trinidad and Tobago. The Mona team made up of Adrian Cotterell, Jahmar Clarke and Natalia Casado coached by Caprice MacFarlane defeated the likes of Norman Manley Law School, and the Eugene Dupuch Law School.
June 30 - New deadline for Graduate programme applications

The Office of Graduate Studies and Research has extended deadlines for applications for select Graduate programmes and all MPhil and PhD programmes.
New deadline for all programmes has been revised to June 30, 2013 (See listing below).
Applications received within the period are eligible for admission this academic year, or may be deferred, upon request, until a later time.

Western Jamaica Campus launches first newspaper

The Western Jamaica Campus of the University of the West Indies, Mona, in Montego Bay, Jamaica now has its own newspaper.
The new WJC Insider, which is produced by students of the Western Jamaica Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI-WJC), hit the streets with its very first edition this month.
The WJC Insider features an array of news, sports, entertainment, opinion and lifestyle features.
Director of the UWI-WJC, Dr. Luz Longsworth, is resportedly pleased with the creation of the Campus’ first newspaper.
Ralph Thompson’s Taking Words For A Walk

Taking Words For A Walk, the latest collection of poetry by Dr. Ralph Thompson, will be launched by the Department of Literatures in English, University of the West Indies, Mona on Sunday, March 24 at 11:00am at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts. Distinguished poet and UWI Emeritus Professor, Mervyn Morris, will be the guest speaker.

UWI's Instructional Development Unit (IDU) is now Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL)

The Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) falls under the Office of the Deputy Principal.
The name of the Instructional Development Unit has been changed on all three residential campuses of the University of the West Indies to Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL). The name change took effect on January 25 this year after approval by the Vice-Chancellor in 2012 and subsequent ratification by the University Finance and General Purposes Committee on January 25, 2013.
