MIA MOTTLEY, CEDELLA MARLEY AMONG SEVEN AFUWI 2021 AWARDEES

Barbadian Prime Minister Hon. Mia Mottley and Cedella Marley, OD, CEO of TUFF Gong International, are among seven distinguished recipients to receive awards at the 24th annual “ The Legacy Continues” Gala Awards of  the American Foundation for the University of the West Indies (AFUWI). The stellar virtual event scheduled for February 21, 2021, is the Foundation’s premier annual fund raiser which provides scholarships for students of the five campuses of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) in Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad, Antigua and the Open Campus.

UWI scientists part of inter-disciplinary study exploring the Medical Beneficial Properties of Guinep

A University of the West Indies team of scientists and international collaborators have conducted an interdisciplinary study that found that there are potentially beneficial medicinal properties in a favorite Caribbean fruit - guinep. The study was published in the highly respected Nature Research Journal Scientific Reports.

Rescheduled UWI graduation ceremonies begin January 10

Graduation season for The University of the West Indies (The UWI) commences this weekend on Sunday, January 10. 

The first graduation ceremony is at the Five Islands Campus in Antigua and Barbuda where six women who will be awarded Diplomas in Education have made history as the first graduands from The UWI’s newest campus which was established in 2019.

Across the regional university, an estimated 8,500 graduands from the class of 2020 will have their degrees conferred during the series of virtual and blended celebrations. The UWI Chancellor, Robert Bermudez will confer the degrees virtually and Chairs of the Campus Councils will preside over the ceremonies in their respective territories.

Release: UWI Mona Announces Partnership with Global Mentorship Initiative (GMI)

Patients with sickle cell disease at times may require surgical removal of their spleen (splenectomy) as part of the treatment for this condition. Operating on these patients whose blood counts are already in a much lower state than usual can pose significant threat to life and well-being.  Surgeons at The University of the West Indies (UWI) operating at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) have shown that their approach of giving blood transfusions to carefully selected patients undergoing this surgical procedure, has achieved excellent outcomes.
