The Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has lowered the volcanic alert level at La Soufrière to ORANGE based on recommendation from The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC).

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to announce that two-time Grammy award-winning recording artist Shaggy will perform at the Virtual Toronto Benefit Awards 2021, on Saturday, May 22 at 7:00 p.m. (Eastern Caribbean)/6:00 p.m. (Jamaica).

New and returning Faculty Deans make history at The UWI

The appointments of seven new and returning Faculty Deans were approved at the annual business meeting of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) last Friday, April 30, 2021. Among them is the regional University’s first ever female Dean of Science and Technology, based at The UWI Cave Hill Campus, Dr. Jeanese Badenock. 
 
Two new female Deans appointed at the Mona Campus, Professor Silvia Kouwenberg in the Faculty of Humanities and Education and Professor Minerva Thame in the Faculty of Medical Sciences also made history as their appointments brought a 50% female representation in deanships at the Campus. 
 

UWI Senior Appointments Approved at Annual Meeting of University Council

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to advise of appointments and reappointments for members of its senior Executive Management approved at its annual business meeting of University Council. 
 
Regarded as the regional university’s highest governing body, the University Council, chaired by Chancellor Robert Bermudez, met virtually on Friday, April 30, 2021. The Council is authorised by The UWI’s Charter and Statutes to review the work of the University together with the audited statement of accounts and makes required appointments of new and returning Executives, Deans and Senior Managers.

People who work shifts appear to be significantly more likely to end up in hospital with COVID-19, than people who have regular work patterns, suggests research published in the online British medical journal, Thorax.

The UWI Seismic Research Centre receives CCRIF grant towards new equipment for monitoring La Soufrière

The UWI Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC) has received a grant from the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF SPC) to support its monitoring efforts during the ongoing eruption of the La Soufrière volcano in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, Professor Hilary Beckles has called on the Organization of American States (OAS) for coordinated, organized global investment in the Caribbean.

Speaking during an open dialogue with Secretary General of the OAS, His Excellency Luis Almagro on April 14, 2021, which marked the observance of Pan American Day, Sir Hilary stated that despite the fact that the Caribbean has always stood on its own feet, a combination of events including public health, chronic diseases and climate change has devastated the region in the last 10-15 years.
