UWI using science to tackle the challenge of Sargassum

Caribbean islands have seen their coastlines blanketed with Sargassum seaweed, every year since 2011. The phenomenon has posed significant challenges for the fishing and tourism sectors. Countries attempt to remedy the problem by raking the Sargassum and disposing of it in landfills, especially before it decomposes. However, this is a very expensive venture, estimated to cost some US$210 million in 2018.

The AstraZeneca-Oxford COVID-19 vaccine has arrived on Caribbean shores. “This marks the start of a new phase in the pandemic in which we start the 'fight back' against COVID-19,” says Professor Clive Landis, Immunologist and Chairman of The University of the West Indies COVID-19 Task Force.

Earlier this month, Barbados received a donation of 100,000 doses of vaccine from India and has subsequently shared the doses with Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Lucia among some other Eastern Caribbean territories.

New Massy United Actuarial Scholarship

New Massy United Actuarial Scholarship

UWI Global Giving is set to benefit from a partnership with Massy United Insurance Ltd (MUI) which has established a scholarship valued at $1.65 million dedicated to students studying Actuarial Science.

Winsome Gibbs, branch manager, last Friday, handed over a cheque in that amount to Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of The UWI Mona Campus, Professor Dale Webber.

The scholarship will be available to applicants studying Actuarial Science following the successful completion of their first year of the programme. This award will cover tuition and accommodation costs for the awardee for the remainder of the programme.

UWI Mona warns the Public of Degrees and other Certificates for Sale

The University of the West Indies, Mona notes the sale of certificates purporting to be undergraduate and post graduate degrees conferred by The University of the West Indies.

The University is currently investigating the matter as we view this as highly concerning and condemn the actions of those involved in this activity.

In the meantime, we wish to advise employers, educational institutions and all others concerned to be vigilant and on the alert for these non-genuine documents.
