Erna Brodber is Writer-in-Residence at UWI, Mona

The Department of Literatures in English, University of the West Indies, Mona announces the appointment of Dr. Erna Brodber as Writer- in-Residence for the academic year 2013-14.
 
Dr. Brodber is an accomplished author, historian and social scientist whose creative and academic works have been published to wide acclaim. Her novels include The Rainmaker’s Mistake (2006), Louisiana (1994), Myal (1988) and Jane and Louisa Will Soon Come Home (1980), which is a prescribed text for one of the department’s courses, African Diaspora Women’s Narrative.
 
 

Revised GPA Scheme for UWI Students In 2014

Undergraduate students across The University of the West Indies will be assessed using a new Grade Point Average (GPA) scheme, effective Semester One 2014/2015. 
 
 
Under the new GPA scheme, the overall manner in which assessments are conducted and grades represented for undergraduate student transcripts will be revised. All new and continuing students across all The University’s campuses will be assessed and graded in a manner which is more transparent and in line with international GPA standards.
 

Dr. Trevor Yee awarded Musgrave Medal

Executive Director of the University of the West Indies’ Natural Products Institute (NPI), Dr Trevor Yee has been awarded a Bronze Musgrave Medal by the Institute of Jamaica.
 
An Awards ceremony has been scheduled for October 16 at the Institute of Jamaica.
 
 
The Award was made by the Council of the Institute and recognizes Dr Yee’s distinguished eminence in the field of natural products.  The field of natural products is one focused on identifying, extracting and commercializing substances found in nature for the purpose of human growth, development and health.
 
 

Professor Archibald McDonald is UWI Mona Principal

Professor Archibald McDonald became Principal of The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Campus effective September 1, 2013.
 
As Principal, Professor McDonald Professor McDonald is the Chief Executive Officer of the Mona Campus, and serves as one of four Principals serving campuses in Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and the Open Campus (UWI’s virtual campus).Previous to his appointment, Professor McDonald was Deputy Principal of Mona, a post he held for the past year.
 

The United Theological College of the West Indies partners with Credit Union to offer affordable education

First Heritage Cooperative Credit Union (FHC) has joined forces with the University of the West Indies’ United Theological College to provide attractive education loans to UTCWI students.
 
FHC will offer the students of UTCWI Education Loan options which include higher loan limits (Secured & Unsecured), flexible repayment terms and attractive interest rates.The partnership agreement was signed by Mrs. Maria Morrison, acting CEO of FHC and Rev. Dr. Marjorie Lewis, President of the UTCWI. 
 

UWI salutes Nelson Mandela on his special Day

For 67 years of his life, Nelson Mandela fought for the rights of humanity.
 
In 2008, following his 90th birthday celebrations, the decision was made to dedicate his birth date as a day to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela’s sacrifices and his selfless work to humanity. July 18th was declared Nelson Mandela Day.
 
The Nelson Mandela Day campaign is a call to action for persons all over the world to do what they can to help change the world for the better by creating ‘a global movement for good’. The campaign message is that since Mr. Mandela gave 67 years of his life fighting for the rights of humanity, everyone can give 67 minutes of their time, to support a meaningful charity or to serve their local communities.
 

Book edited by Professor Carolyn Cooper Receives international recognition

Global Reggae, the book edited by UWI Mona Professor Carolyn Cooper and published by UWI Press, has received international recognition at the American Library Association Meeting in Chicago, Illinois. 

 



The book, a compilation of lectures from the 2008 ‘Global Reggae Conference’ convened at The UWI Mona, was named as a ForeWord 2012 Book of the Year.  ForeWord awards represent independent publishing at its finest and are selected from thousands of books by librarians and booksellers based on editorial excellence, professional production, originality, author credentials relative to the book, and the value the book adds to its genre. 

 

Four UWI Lecturers Appointed Professor

The Office of Administration at the Vice-Chancellery of The University of the West Indies (UWI) is pleased to announce that four of its Senior Lecturers have been promoted to the rank of Professor based on their academic qualifications, research achievements and active involvement in the University community. These are Drs Moawia Alghalith, Rosemarie Wright-Pascoe, Michael Taylor and Wendel Abel.

UWI Vice Chancellor to present 6 Awards for Excellence this year

UWI Regional Headquarters, Jamaica – Five outstanding faculty members and one Research Centre at The University of the West Indies will receive the 2013 Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence during the week of graduation ceremonies this coming October.
 
 
On a date to be announced, Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (UWI), Professor E. Nigel Harris, will present awards to Professors Shivananda Nayak, Pathmanathan Umaharan, and Dr Carol Logie of the St Augustine Campus, Professor Rose-Marie Antoine of the Cave Hill Campus, and Professor Horace Fletcher of the Mona Campus. The Seismic Research Centre based at the St Augustine Campus will be recognised for its excellent research output.
