Child Research Conference Focuses on Violations of Child Rights

Violence, lack of family care and sub-standard education are among the many violations of child rights to be explored at the sixth annual Caribbean Child Research Conference being held October 19-20, 2011 at the Jamaica Conference Centre.
 
The conference will be held under the theme “Promoting Child Rights with Equity – Our Children in Post-Independence Times”. Jan Vandemoortele, an international expert on child rights, economics and social policy will deliver the keynote address on “Equity Begins with Children.”
 

UWI Recognizes Outstanding Staff with Prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Awards

Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (UWI) Professor E. Nigel Harris presented awards to seven outstanding University staff members at a ceremony held at the St. Augustine Campus last Wednesday. Professors Kathleen Coard, Minerva Thame, Anthony Clayton and Mrs. Eda Martin of the Mona Campus; Dr. Anna-May Edwards-Henry and Professor Vijay Naraynsingh, St. Augustine Campus, and Professor Julie Meeks Gardner of the Open Campus, were this year’s recipients of the prestigious Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence.
 

Public Forum Commemorates International Day of Rural Women

Jamaica will join other countries around the world to observe October 15 as International Day of Rural Women which has been celebrated since 2008. The commemoration recognizes the critical role and contribution of rural women and girls in enhancing agricultural and rural development, improving food security and eradicating rural poverty.
 
An education forum will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 10:30am at St. James Gibraltar Anglican Church Hall, Endeavour District, Gibraltar, St. Ann to observe International Day of Rural Women.  The event takes place under the theme, Vision 50/50:  Rural Women and Resilience to Poverty - Tackling Climate Change and Rural Poverty for Sustainable Development.
 

Seven to Receive UWI Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence

Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (UWI) Professor E. Nigel Harris will present awards to seven outstanding University staff members at the 2011 Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence. The presentation ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. on October 5, 2011 at the Daaga Auditorium, St. Augustine Campus.  This year’s recipients are Professors Kathleen Coard, Minerva Thame, Anthony Clayton and Mrs. Eda Martin of the Mona Campus; Dr. Anna-May Edwards-Henry and Professor Vijay Naraynsingh, St. Augustine Campus, and Professor Julie Meeks Gardner of the Open Campus.

Professor Verene Shepherd, Professor of Social History and University Director,  Institute for Gender and Development Studies (IGDS) will open one of two roundtable discussions at the upcoming United Nations (UN) meeting at its Headquarters in New York  on September 22. The Roundtable Discussions mark the 10th Anniversary of the Durban Anti-Racism Conference held in South Africa in 2001.

Caribbean Climate Modelling Experts Convene for Meeting at UWI, Mona

The Department of Physics at UWI, Mona will host the 4th Caribbean Climate Modeller’s Meeting on September 22-23, 2011. The Meeting will see all regional Modelling Centres being represented including the UWI Climate Studies Group at UWI, Mona (Jamaica), St. Augustine (Trinidad) and Cave Hill Barbados),  Instituto de Meteorlogia (INSMET-Cuba); Antom de Kom University (Suriname); Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre ( 5 Cs) (Belize); UAG (French West Indies). Also a part of the team of experts at the Meeting are Professor Anthony Chen (UWI, Mona) and Professor John Agard (UWI, St. Augustine) who are members of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which, along with former United States Vice President, Al Gore Jr.

MSB’s EMBA & MBA Programmes Receive AMBA Accreditation

The Mona School of Business (MSB) of the University of the West Indies (UWI), has received accreditation from the international Association of MBAs  (AMBA) for achieving what AMBA describes as the highest standard in  Postgraduate Business Education for its EMBA and MBA programmes, The recognition which was received last week, notes that AMBA’s accreditation is earned only by Business Schools with the “best programmes”. AMBA’s  accreditation is internationally recognised as the global standard for all MBA, MBM and DBA programmes.
 

New Registrar For UWI Open Campus

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs. Karen Ford-Warner as Campus Registrar, UWI Open Campus, effective August 15, 2011.
 

UWI, Mona Students Excel at World University Games

The University of the West Indies, Mona congratulates Hanlse Parchment and Jason Young who won medals for Jamaica at the recently concluded World University Games held in Shenzhen, China. Hansle, a third year student in the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, won Jamaica’s sixth gold medal  in the men’s 110m hurdles and ran  a personal best of 13.24 seconds. Parchment is now Jamaica’s third fastest sprint hurdler in the event. He is also the Gibson Relay record holder in the event.
 
Jason, a second year student in the Faculty of Social Sciences placed joint second in the 200 metres event. Both are recipients of UWI, Mona Sports Scholarships.
