UWI appoints New Pro-Vice-Chancellor Planning & Development

The University of the West Indies has named Professor Andrew S. Downes as the new Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Planning and Development to replace Dr Bhoendradatt Tewarie, who was recently named Minister of Planning, Social and Economic Development and Gender Affairs in the Trinidad and Tobago Government. This announcement was made by UWI Vice Chancellor, Professor E. Nigel Harris at last week’s round of University meetings held at the Cave Hill Campus in Barbados.

In his new role as Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Downes will oversee the final year of implementation of the University’s 2007-2012 Strategic Plan and coordinate the construction of the 2012-2017 Plan.

UWI Annual Nursing Midwifery Research Conference and Mary Seivwright Day May 26 – 27, 2011

The UWI School of Nursing, Mona, will host its Annual Nursing and Midwifery Research Conference and Mary Seivwright Day from May 26-27, at the School’s Lecture Theatre, the Mary Seivwright Building, 9 Gibraltar Camp Way, UWI, Mona Campus.

The purpose of this year’s conference, which brings together regional and international participants and presenters, is to enable nursing lecturers, tutors, managers, clinical staff, students and policy makers to explore international evidence on innovative approaches to nursing education in the classroom and clinical areas.

Cheryl Brown, Jamaican Representative to Participate in IBC Meetings in Azerbaijan

Manager of the Office of Sponsored Research (OSR) at The UWI, Mona and Attorney-At-Law, Cheryl Brown has been invited by the President of Azerbaijan to attend meetings of the International Bioethics Committee (IBC) being held in Baku, Azerbaijan from May 28-June 4, 2011.  She is the only Caribbean representative who will attend this meeting. The International Bioethics Committee (IBC) is a body of 36 independent experts that follows progress in the life sciences and its applications in order to ensure respect for human dignity and freedom.

IGDS Director Joins United Nations Country Mission To Portugal

Professor Verene A. Shepherd, University Director of the Institute for Gender and Development Studies joins other United Nations (UN) experts on a country mission to Portugal from May 16-20, 2011. The visit is at the invitation of the Government of Portugal and is in keeping with the responsibilities of the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent, of which she is a member.

UWI Council Re-examines the University’s Role as an Instrument of Regional Development

At the annual business meeting of University Council held on May 6, 2011 at the Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank Secretariat in Basseterre, St Kitts, with participation of Ministers of Education, government officials, academics and members of the private sector, the UWI’s supreme governing body undertook a comprehensive examination of its role and mandate as a catalyst for development in the English-speaking Caribbean region. It was acknowledged that the climate within which the University operated had changed drastically since the formation of the institution in 1948. Its regional remit and its role in strengthening the integration process had become even more critical now as governments continued to examine their commitment to regional integration.

Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce Speaks at MSB’s ICT Conference

Hon. Karl Samuda, Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce will be the keynote speaker, at the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day Conference on May 17-18, 2011 at the Faculty of Law at UWI, Mona. The event is being hosted by the Mona School of Business (MSB) at UWI.  The Conference will bring together policy makers, regulators, academics and practitioners in the field of Information and Communications Technology to discuss key ICT-related issues and strategies. It will also highlight important research being done at the Mona School of Business, through the Telecommunications Policy and Management Programme and other departments. 

UWI Research Reveals Low Household Computer and Internet Access

Only 24% of households have a computer at home and only 16% of Jamaican households have internet access. These findings were disclosed by Professor Hopeton Dunn, Director, Telecommunications Policy Management Programme, as he presented in the outcomes of the recently completed Caribbean ICT Indicators and Broadband Survey for Jamaica.
The high cost of equipment is a major factor in not having internet access or computers in the home. However, several homes without a computer reported higher internet use via mobile phones and at other locations.

Regional UWI Experts Participate in Workshop for the Establishment of Gender and Development Course in Haiti

A team of UWI researchers from the Regional Coordinating Unit of the Institute for Gender and Development Studies (IGDS) along with members of the Institutes of Gender and Development Studies from Cave Hill and St. Augustine will participate in a workshop to support the establishment of a gender and development course for civil society and other key stakeholder in Haiti. The Workshop takes place from May 11-12.

Hugh Small Delivers Coral Gardens Lecture at UWI, Mona

“Coral Gardens 1963: A Legal Analysis and Implications for the Jamaican Justice System” is the title of the public lecture being delivered by Hugh Small, Q.C. and Consultant, Graham, Thompson & Company. The Lecture is hosted by the UWI, Mona through the Institute for Gender and Development Studies (IGDS) in collaboration with the Institute of Caribbean Studies on April 21, 2011 at 5 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona. 

During his Lecture Small will recount aspects of the 1963 Coral Gardens incident and events leading up to it. He will more importantly relate how these events impacted subsequently on developments in the justice system. Also sharing on this occasion are members of the Rastafarian community who survived the tragedy.
