Donovan Campbell, UWI Postgraduate Student Receives Award for Doctoral Research

“Donovan Campbell was one of three international postgraduate students invited to the Third International Conference on Climate Change: Impacts and Responses in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil recently to receive an award for their outstanding doctoral research.

Mr Campbell is a PhD candidate in the Department of Geography & Geology, University of the West Indies, Mona. He was also asked to Chair five panel sessions as well as to present on his research topic at the Conference themed “Climate Change and its Global Implications for People, Ethics and Equity”. 

UWI Postgraduate Student Wins International Year of Chemistry Award

Charah Watson, a PhD. Candidate in the Department of Chemistry, The University of the West Indies, Mona, is the recipient of an International Year of Chemistry Award.  The Award was presented to her recently at a prestigious Natural Products, Medicinal, and Organic Synthesis Chemistry Symposium held in celebration of the International Year of Chemistry in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and at which four Nobel Prize Winners in Chemistry were among the invited speakers.
 
The year 2011 has been designated by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry as the International Year of Chemistry.
 

UWI, Mona Hosts Sports Leadership Academy to Target Young Men

The Department of Sports at UWI, Mona hosts the second staging of the UWI Sports Leadership Academy from July 19-22, 2011 for 14-16 years old secondary school males.  This Academy is designed to encourage athletically inclined young men to aspire for tertiary education and to assist in shaping them to be well rounded leaders. Additionally, the Academy will expose them to positive role models through interactive sessions dubbed, “Mighty Men of Jamaica”. The initiative is in response to the disproportionate number of males at the tertiary level of education in comparison to their female counterpart.
 

Four UWI, Mona Students Receive CCRIF Disaster Management Scholarships

Four students of The University of the West Indies, (UWI), Mona have been awarded the inaugural UWI Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) scholarships. They are graduate students: Ms. Gerarda Ramcharansingh, Mr. Kevin Douglas, and Mr. Dorlan Burrell pursuing the Masters of Science in the Disaster Management programme and Ms Odene Baker, an undergraduate student in the Department of Geography & Geology.
 

UWI, Cave Hill Deputy Principal to Receive Highest CARICOM Award for Women

Dr. Violet Eudine Barriteau, Professor of Gender and Public Policy and Deputy Principal of the UWI, Cave Hill Campus will receive the 10th Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Triennial Award for Women for her remarkable contribution to the field of gender and development and her role as “a powerful exemplar of self-respect, self-discipline, vision and leadership.” She will be presented with the Award at the Opening Ceremony of the 22nd Meeting of the Prime Ministerial Sub-Committee on External Negotiations in St Kitts and Nevis, on Thursday, June 30, 2011.
 
The Triennial Award for Women was introduced in 1983 to recognize and honour Caribbean women who have made significant contributions to socio-economic development at the national and regional levels.

National Strategy Targets Youth

The findings of work done towards the creation of a youth mainstreaming strategy are to be unveiled during a two-day workshop at the Faculty of Law, University of the West Indies, Mona from June 29 – 30. The overall aim of the youth mainstreaming strategy is to strengthen their involvement in governance and to invigorate the institutions directly involved in serving Jamaican youth.
 

UWI Librarian Named ACURIL’s Caribbean Information Professional of the Year 2011

Ms. Beverley Lashley, Head, UWI, Mona Science Branch Library and Coordinator of the Caribbean Disaster Information Network (CARDIN) was named the Caribbean Information Professional of the Year for 2011 by the Association of Caribbean University, Research and Institutional Libraries (ACURIL).  The Award is made to a member of ACURIL who has demonstrated individual commitment, excellence in performance, and outstanding achievement as an information professional. It was presented at the recently held ACURIL’s XLI President’s Banquet in Florida where she was recognized for her contribution and excellent work at CARDIN.
 

UWI Lecturer Elected to Inter American Commission on Human Rights

Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Law at the University of the West Indies, Ms. Tracy Robinson, was elected a member of the Inter American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) at the 41st Regular Session of the Organisation of American States (OAS) General Assembly, held from June 5-7 in San Salvador. Ms. Robinson received the highest number of votes among the candidates and will serve a four year term commencing January 1, 2012.
 
Ms. Robinson graduated from the University of the West Indies in 1991 with a First Class Honours Degree in Law. In 1992 she was the recipient of the Rhodes Scholarship, where she studied Law at Oxford University. She also holds a Masters of Law Degree from Yale University.
 

Dr. Eris D. Schoburgh Elected to the Board of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum for 2011-13

Dr. Eris D. Schoburgh, lecturer in public policy and public sector management in the Department of Government and coordinator of the Public Sector Management Unit has been elected to the Board of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) for 2011-13. The election took place at the CLGF Conference held in Wales, recently where Dr. Schoburgh presented a paper at the Research Symposium. Her election is in recognition of her advancement of local government research in the Caribbean and her knowledgeable contribution to conference deliberations in Cardiff and previously in the Bahamas during the 2009 conference.
 

Archaeological Dig at UWI Explores Mona Great House and Papine Village

A team of UWI, Mona Archaeology lecturer, students and archaeologists from the Digital Archaeological Archive of Comparative Slavery (DAACS) at the Thomas Jefferson Foundation in Virginia, USA recently explored sites of the early Mona Great House and Papine Works on the Mona Campus. The team was lead by Mr. Ivor Conolley of UWI’s Department of History and Archaeology and co-directed by Dr. Jillian Galle, Director DAACS.
 
The Archaeological Dig has uncovered artifacts including fragments of ceramic, metal, glass and other materials as well as building foundations of structures located south of the main building (Great House) for analysis and interpretation.
