MONA PRINCIPAL APPOINTED AS MEMBER OF THE ORDER OF JAMAICA

The University of the West Indies, Mona extends warmest congratulations to our Principal, Professor the Hon. Gordon Shirley, who has been appointed a member of the Order of Jamaica for excellence in academic and public service.

Congratulations are also extended to two other members of the University community who have received awards: renowned poet and professor emeritus Mervyn Morris, who has been conferred with the nation’s third highest honour, the Order of Merit, for his distinguished contribution in the field of West Indian Literature and retired professor John Homi,who has been named to the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander (Honorary) for his contribution to the development of Anaesthesia Services and training in the Caribbean.

UWI, Mona to Host Conference on Food Security and Agricultural Development

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona will host a conference on Food Security and Agricultural Development from July 28- 30, 2009 on the Mona Campus.

The UWI, in keeping with its tradition of acting as a catalyst to address global, regional and local challenges, will explore the future of Food Security and Agricultural Development in the Americas with the aim of both understanding the challenges and identifying possible solutions.    

UNESCO Funds Distance Teaching for Development of Small Island States

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has made a grant of just over J $1,000,000 to support the University Consortium of Small Island States (UCSIS) to develop a joint degree programme to be offered by the five members of the consortium: The University of the West Indies, The University of the South Pacific, The University of the Virgin Islands, The University of Malta and The University of Mauritius.

Five To Receive Prestigious Vice-Chancellor’s Award For Excellence 2008/2009

Five members of the academic staff at the Cave Hill, Mona and St. Augustine Campuses of The University of the West Indies will receive the prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence for the academic year 2008/2009 at a ceremony to be held on Thursday, November 5, 2009 at the Mona Campus.

CAAM-HP Extends UWI Accreditation With Commendations

Two medical teaching programmes at The University of the West Indies (UWI) have been extended accreditation status from the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and Other Health Professions (CAAM-HP) 2009. The UWI Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Veterinary Medicine programmes both received accreditation and commendation from CAAM-HP.

In extending the accreditation status of the UWI MBBS to 2012, CAAM-HP commended the University on the progress made in the governance of the Faculty of Medicine across campuses. CAAM-Hp also congratulated the leadership of the School of Veterinary Medicine for the successes evident in the programme.

Cash Prizes To Participants In The Tracer Study Of Graduates

In a random computer draw five winners of cash prizes, with a total value of $US3000, were chosen from among the 600 participants of the February 2009 Tracer Study of First Degree Graduates, Class of 2007, of the UWI, Mona.

Intended as an annual event, the  Study seeks to determine, among other things, where Mona’s graduates are placed  a year after graduation, how much they earn, if their university education is relevant to their jobs, and whether or not they intend to pursue postgraduate training at UWI or elsewhere.   The findings of the survey are crucial in helping to shape Mona’s curriculum to ensure relevance and marketability. 

UWI, Mona Launches Book Titled, “Writing Jamaican the Jamaican Way /Ou Fi Rait Jamiekan”

The Jamaican Language Unit at the University of the West Indies, Mona is set to release its first major commercial publication, a book titled, “Writing Jamaican the Jamaican Way/ Ou fi Rait Jamiekan”. The book launch takes place on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at 6 pm at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI, Mona.

UWISON Now PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre For Nursing And Midwifery Development In The Caribbean

Dr. Jean Yan, the Chief Scientist Nursing and Midwifery, WHO, Geneva, Switzerland and Coordinator, of the Health Professions Networks officially launched the UWI School of Nursing (UWISON), Mona, as the PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing and Midwifery Development in the Caribbean on Friday May 29. The launch was one of the major activities which took place during The UWI School of Nursing, Mona, Annual Nursing Midwifery Research Conference and Mary Seivwright Day held from May 28-29, at the School’s Lecture Theatre on the Mona Campus. Although the official launch was held on Friday May 29 the designation took effect on November 22, 2006.  

UWI honours sixteen of the Region’s beacons

In its ongoing campaign to shine light on those who tirelessly contribute to the growth of the region, The University of the West Indies (UWI) will confer honorary degrees on sixteen such worthy individuals during graduation ceremonies on all the UWI campuses later this year.

A Distinguished Caribbean Scholar Passes On

Professor Stanley Reginald Richard Allsopp, retired UWI Professor of Caribbean Lexicography at the Cave Hill Campus, died Wednesday June 3rd, after years of failing health. His death brings to an end a long period of unique and brilliant service to the intellectual development of the Caribbean and its Diaspora. Principal Sir Hilary Beckles described the former Cave Hill academic as “the quintessential Caribbean man of words, a scholar steeped in the finest tradition of regional research who internationalised his discipline of lexicography in the way no other has done”. He was not only a brilliant academic; he was a colleague who gave his entire energy to the building of the UWI at Cave Hill.
