Condolences - Robert LePage and Mortimo Planno
The University of the West Indies has learned with regret of the passing of Professor Robert LePage, Professor Emeritus and a former member of staff of the then Department of English and Mortimo Planner. Prof. LePage was a pioneer in the development of Creole Linguistics. He was co-author with Prof. Frederick Cassidy of the “Dictionary of Jamaican English” and the organizer of the first ever conference on Creole Language. Conference on Caribbean Migration: Forced and Free
The UWI Migration Study Group is pleased to announce a conference on “Caribbean Migration: Forced and Free”, scheduled to take place at the UWI, Mona Campus, Kingston, Jamaica on June 13 and 14 with an Opening Session on the evening of June 12.
Enrolment at UWI Mona now over 15,000 students
Enrolment at the UWI Mona Campus for the 2005-2006 academic year now stands at just over 15, 000 students. This represents a four percent increase over registration for last year and a thirteen percent increase over the three-year period 2003/2004 to 2005/2006. The enrolment figures were presented at the meeting of the Mona Campus Council, held in the Council Room last Friday, March 10. Campus Council was told that since 2003/2004, the Mona Campus has surpassed the targeted 2.4 percent annual growth in on-campus enrolment as specified in the Strategic Plan.
Exhibition in Honour of the Most Honourable Hugh Lawson Shearer
“Hugh Lawson Shearer (1923 – 2004) - Trade Unionist, Prime Minister, A Man of the People” is the caption of an exhibition mounted in the Catalogue Hall of the Main Library. It was first mounted on February 28, 2006, by the Library at the Trade Union Education Institute, on behalf of the UWI School of Continuing Studies. The occasion was the renaming of the Trade Union Education Institute to the Hugh Lawson Shearer Trade Union Education Institute in honour of this outstanding union leader.
Intellectual Property Regional Workshop
The Caribbean Publishers Network and the World Intellectual Property Organization in association with The University of the West Indies will host a Regional Workshop on Intellectual Property Issues in the Publishing Industry from March 30-31 at the UWI Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, Jamaica and from April 3-4 at the UWI St. Augustine, the Heartese Facilities, Trinidad. Mona Online Research Database
The Library wishes to announce that the Mona Online Research Database is now accessible from the URL http://mord.mona.uwi.edu . This initiative was recommended for funding by the Mona Strategic Transformation Team. Collaborators in the Project are Mona Information Technology Services (MITS) and Human Resources Management Division (HRMD).
Satisfying Human Resource Needs
As part of its efforts to satisfy the human resource needs of Jamaica and the Caribbean, the UWI Mona Campus has introduced a number of new programmes aimed at satisfying the needs of the private and public sectors. The focus of the new programmes has been in health, education, environmental science, foreign language studies and computer science and information technology.
UWI/Colombia Cultural Exchange
Interested persons within the University community who have achieved the Intermediate level of Spanish and who are eager to improve their command of the language are invited to participate in the UWI/Colombia Cultural Exchange programme June/July 2006. 22nd Annual Elsa Goveia Memorial Lecture
The Department of History and Archaeology will host the 22nd Annual Elsa Goveia Memorial Lecture, scheduled for Wednesday, March 29 at 5:00 p.m. at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts. This year’s speaker will be Professor Nigel Bolland who will be speaking on the topic “Caribbean Cultures and Identities: Interpreting Garifuna Stories’.
