“Jamaica Wellness Tour” to be launched at UWI Health Centre

The “Jamaica Wellness Tour”, a project of the Rotary Club of Liguanea Plains in association with the Shipping Association of Jamaica, Blue Cross Jamaica and the Diabetes Association of Jamaica, will be officially launched at the UWI Health Centre on Monday, April 10.
The Shipping Association of Jamaica’s mobile clinic will be based at the parking lot of the UWI Health Centre from April 10 to 13, providing health tests to the university population and residents of surrounding communities.

22nd Annual Elsa Goveia Memorial Lecture

The Department of History and Archaeology will host the 22nd Annual Elsa Goveia Memorial Lecture on Wednesday, March 29 at 5:00 p.m. at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts. This year’s speaker will be Professor Nigel Bolland, Colgate University who will be speaking on the topic “Caribbean Cultures and Identities: Interpreting Garifuna Stories’. The public is invited.

43rd Regional Four-Month Course

The Graduation exercise for 43rd Regional Four Month Course in the Principles and Practice of Social Work will take place at the Social Welfare Centre on Thursday, April 27, at 5:30 p.m.
This year there are forty (40) participants from three (3) counties, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Jamaica. The participants represents a wide range of social services, which include persons in the field of health, correctional services, policing, counseling, religion, community development, social welfare, service clubs and youth work.

Association of Schools of Social Work Conference

Lecturer in the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work Dr. Peta-Anne Baker and Resident Tutor at the Social Welfare Training Centre at the UWI Mona Campus Lincoln Williams were among 24 participants from 17 countries who attended the recent half-yearly meeting of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Schools of Social Work held in Hatfield, England. The meeting focused on the board’s strategic planning process, reaffirmed the organization’s mission statement and worked to draft goals and objectives for each of the four key areas of its mission.

Blood Donation Drive

The University of the West Indies in partnership with National Blood Transfusion Service will host a blood drive on Tuesday March 28 and Wednesday March 29 in the Assembly Hall, Mona from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

CCDC Website

The Caribbean Child Development Centre (CCDC) has launched its webpage, http://uwi.edu/ccdc/index.htm . The webpage describes the current and recent activities of the Centre and hosts a large database http://uwi.edu/ccdc/resourceroom/index.htm. The Organization Projects and Documents (OPD) database provides a bibliography of organizations and full-text of research and documents on issues related to children; such as the rights of the child, adolescent and family.

International Nursing Midwifery Research Conference and Mary Seivwright Day

The Nursing Midwifery Research Centre of The UWI School of Nursing, Mona (UWISON) will be hosting its annual International Nursing Midwifery Research Conference and Mary Seivwright Day under the theme “Changing Visions to Reality Through Nursing Research 1966-2006”. The Conference will be held from June 1-3 at the Sunset Jamaica Grande Hotel, Ocho Rios, Jamaica.
This year’s conference is a special occasion for UWISON as the School celebrates 40 years of dedicated service to the development of nursing education in the Caribbean.

Site for Campus Centre

As part of the Strategic Transformation Initiative at the UWI, Mona Campus, a Campus Centre is to be built on lands bordered by Gibraltar Hall Road and Castries Drive next to the Old Library and the UWI Cooperative Credit Union building. Work has now begun to secure this site to make it accessible for the preliminary preparation that will be necessary before construction can take place.

Yoga and Stress Management

The Wellness Task Force, as part of its mandate to enhance wellness among staff and students at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus will a series of classes in Yoga as a Tool for Stress Management, beginning Tuesday, April 4. There will be two groups with classes offered on Tuesdays or Thursdays for a period of five weeks, from 5:45 a.m. to 6:45 a.m. The venue will be the Indoor Gymnasium beside the pool at the Mona Bowl. Space is limited so interested persons are encourage to register early via email to asngela.gordon@uwimona.edu.jm by Friday March 31, 2006.

ACHEA Stress Management Workshop

The Association of Caribbean Higher Education Administrators (ACHEA) Jamaica Chapter, Professional Development Committee will host a Stress Management Workshop at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge on Friday, April 7, 2006 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
The Workshop will address the theme, "The Administrator's Dilemna: Maintaining Health in Competitive and Demanding Work Environments." Issues of focus will include:
