Professor Stephen Vasciannie

Professor Stephen Vasciannie, Head of the Department of Government at UWI Mona has been elected by the Organisation of American States (OAS) to fill the vacancy left on the Inter-American Judicial Committee (IJC), replacing Jamaica’s former Solicitor General, Dr. Kenneth Rattray. The OAS has announced that by acclamation, the member state representatives elected Professor Vasciannie during a regular session of the OAS Permanent Council, which approved the Jamaican government's nomination.

Special Exhibition on Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford

The School of Continuing Studies, Camp Road, will host a special exhibition entitled Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford: From Bunkers Hill to the Vice Chancellery, UWI, from November 12-18, 2004. The exhibition will be on display to the public on Friday, November 12 to Sunday, November 14 from 2.00 to 6.00 p.m. at the University Centre, 2A Camp Road, Kingston 4.

The Jamaican Language Unit Public Lecture

The Jamaican Language Unit, Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy, UWI, Mona will present a public lecture on The Creole-English-Spanish Trilingual Education Project, San Andre¢s, Colombia by Dr. Ron Morren of the Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics, Dallas, Texas. The lecture takes place on Tuesday, November 16 from 4:00 pm – 6:30 p.m. in the Multifunctional Room, Main Library on the Mona campus. The campus community and the public are invited.

The Office of Placement and Career Services

The Office of Placement and Career Services, The University of the West Indies, Mona will host the launch of its ‘Joblink’ Website on Wednesday, November 17 at 3:00 p.m. in the Council Room, Senate Building, Mona Campus.

UWI Graduation Ceremonies

Some 2,730 persons graduated with first degrees from UWI Mona in ceremonies held on Friday and Saturday, November 5 and 6 at the Mona Campus. UWI Chancellor, Sir George Alleyne in his address to the graduates welcomed them into the circle of alumni of the University. He also expressed the hope that some of the current graduates would return at the 100th graduation ceremony and would have fond memories of their stay at Mona that would allow them to be proud of the brand that is connoted by the University of the West Indies.

Wine and Cheese and Art Exhibition

Cluster Nine (Castro), Rex Nettleford Hall, UWI, Mona will be hosting its annual Wine and Cheese and Art Exhibition on Sunday, November 21 at 6:00 p.m. in the Rex Nettleford Hall’s Multi-purpose Room. Art and Craft items from 15 different local artists will be on sale, while several cheeses, cheese dishes and wines will be available for sampling. Proceeds are in aid of the Children’s First organisation in Spanish Town.

World of Work Seminars

The annual World of Work seminars organized by the Office of Placement and Career Services at UWI Mona continues on Thursday, November 18 with a presentation titled Money Management: Ensuring Financial Success. The seminar takes place in SR10, Faculty of Social Sciences at 3:00 p.m. The presenter will be Mr. David Wan, General Manager, Victoria Mutual Wealth Management. All UWI students, particularly final year students are invited to attend.

Advent Fellowship

Advent Fellowship, UWI, Mona will present Chapel Day 2004 on Wednesdat, November 10. On Friday, November 12 there will also be fellowship at the Nurses Residence at the University Hospital at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, November 13, the fellowship is inviting students and staff to Chapel Day activities in the Assembly Hall at Mona. Activities begin with Divine Worship and Sabbath School at 9:00 a.m. At 3:30 p.m. there will be a discussion on “Relationships”. Speaker will be Pastor E.T. Thomas, Youth Director of the West Indies Union of Seventh Day Adventists.

Condolences

The UWI has learnt with deep regret of the passing of two graduates in a car crash on Friday October 29, while traveling to Kingston to finalize their arrangements for Graduation. The two colleagues are Ricardo Harris, MB,BS and Damion Powell, BSc Social Sciences (Psychology Major). Both of these graduates would have been presented at the graduation ceremony on Saturday November 6. The University community expresses sincerest condolences to their families and friends.

Dr. Thelora Reynolds selected as a Diamond Honoree

Director of the Office of Student Services at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Dr. Thelora Reynolds, has been selected as a Diamond Honoree of the Educational Leadership Foundation of the American College Personnel Association (ACPA). The award recognizes her many contributions to higher education and to the association which is one of the largest and most prestigious national associations dedicated to student affairs and services on college campuses across the United States and the world.
