“Wind and Rain, the Hurricane Expo”

June 1 marks the beginning of the 2004 hurricane season and Safety and Emergency Management Systems in association with UWI, Mona will launch an Awareness and Preparedness Initiative on the Mona Campus. This will take the form of an exposition to be held on Friday May 28 under the theme, “Wind and Rain, the Hurricane Expo”. The objective is to expose members of the campus community to all the available options that can be used to prepare for the hurricane season.

Basic Research Skills Training Workshop

The Epidemiology Research Unit of the Tropical Medicine Research Institute (TMRI), UWI in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH), Jamaica and the Caribbean Health Research Council, Trinidad and Tobago will host a Basic Research Skills Training Workshop from June 14-17, 2004. The venue will be Sickle Cell Unit Seminar room on the UWI Mona campus.

Concert in Honour of Noel Dexter

The Bronx Singers conducted by Jamaican musician Geoffrey Fairweather, will host a concert in honour of Noel Dexter, composer and conductor of the University Singers on Friday, May 14 in New York City, USA. The concert is under the distinguished patronage of The Honorable Dr. Basil K. Bryan, Consul General of Jamaica. The concert will honour the lifetime achievements of Noel Dexter and will feature Beverly Dexter, Soprano. The programme will include songs by Noel Dexter and Edward Margetson along with a performance by Adrian Fletcher, Choreographer and Dancer.

Fulbright Fellows

Three University of the West Indies lecturers have been awarded grants under the renowned William J. Fulbright Program to carry out fully-funded research in the United States that will later benefit Jamaicans and the economy. The three researchers, Dr. Lisa Lindo, Dr. Maxine Gossell-Williams and Dr. Wayne McLaughlin of the UWI’s Department of Basic Medical Sciences, have been awarded Fulbright grants under the Central America/Caribbean Special Fulbright Foreign Researcher Program for the calendar year 2004.

LACC - Call for Papers

The Latin American-Caribbean Centre (LACC), UWI is pleased to announce the Fifth in its Seminar Series highlighting the socio-economic and cultural impact of intra-regional West Indian migration. This year the focus will be on Migration to Nicaragua. Seminar dates are July 2-3, 2004 and the venue is the UWI, Mona Campus in Kingston, Jamaica. Annual Nursing Midwifery Conference and Mary Seivwright Day

The Department of Advanced Nursing Education (DANE), University of the West Indies (UWI), will host its Annual Nursing Midwifery Conference and Mary Seivwright Day May 13 & 14, 2004 on the Mona Campus. The theme of the conference is “Nurses Challenging Health Issues Through Research”. Conference sessions will be held simultaneously in the Social Sciences, Inter- Faculty and Chemistry (C5) Lecture Theatres. The highlight of the conference will be the launch of the Mary Seivwright Distinguished Nursing Research Lecture by Dr.

Certificate in Labour Studies

The University of The West Indies, School of Continuing Studies is inviting applications for its Certificate in Labour Studies Programme for the academic year 2004-2005. The programme will consist of courses to be offered through face to face teaching at the local University Centre, through the Trade Union Education Institute (TUEI) of the School of Continuing Studies.

CMS Student for Coral Reef Ecology Summer Course in Bermuda

Michelle McNaught, a CMS graduate student conducting research on the re-colonization of the cut face at Rackham’s Cay has been admitted to the Coral Reef Ecology Summer course at the Bermuda Biological Station for Research (BBSR). She was able to secure significant funding from the BBSR. The financial support will allow her to participate in the intensive coral reef ecology course. The course will run from June 2 to 24, and she is expected to gain invaluable training in practical techniques commonly used in coral reef research.

Electricity Suspension

The electricity supply on the UWI Mona Campus will be suspended on Sunday, May 16, 2004 between the hours of 9.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. The entire campus will be affected by this outage. This is necessary because the Jamaica Public Service Company Limited will be working on the system to remove the present feed from Shed Lane to the Aqueduct. The JPSCo has promised that the campus will have a more reliable electricity supply from this feed.

Fellowships: Centre for Caribbean Studies University of Warwick

The Centre for Caribbean Studies at the University of Warwick is pleased to announce two Research Fellowships for the academic year 2004-05. These Fellowships are open to staff and post-doctoral applicants from the University of the West Indies and the University of Guyana whose work addresses an aspect of Caribbean history, culture or society. The Fellowships are intended to allow scholars to conduct research in the UK for a period normally of one month and are available during the period from October 11 to December 1, 2004 and January 10 to March 15, 2005.
