UWIAA Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of the UWI Alumni Association (Jamaica Chapter) will be held on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at 6:00 p.m. in the Blue Room, Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI, Mona Campus. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. and the first 100 persons registered will have a chance to win a special prize.

Annual Scientific & Business Conference - UWIHARP

The University of the West Indies’ HIV/AIDS Response Programme (UWIHARP) will present its 2nd Annual Scientific & Business Conference from Friday, June 11 to Sunday, June 13. The opening ceremony will take place on Thursday June 10. The conference theme is “HIV/AIDS: Research Partnerships for Action” and the venue is the Knutsford Court Hotel, 11, Ruthven Road, Kingston 10. Basic Research Skills Training Workshop

The Epidemiology Research Unit of the Tropical Medicine Research Institute (TMRI), UWI in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH), Jamaica and the Caribbean Health Research Council, Trinidad and Tobago will host a Basic Research Skills Training Workshop from June 14-17, 2004. The venue will be the Sickle Cell Unit Seminar Room on the UWI Mona Campus. The training offered by the workshop sessions will enable participants to identify important reasons for carrying out research and choose relevant and feasible topics for research.

Credit Union Annual General Meeting

At the recently held 45th Annual General Meeting of the UWI (Mona) & Community Co-operative Credit Union Ltd. it was reported that 2003 was another profitable year for the Credit Union and its members. Key performance indicators showed share capital moving by 24.38% from 187.56M in 2002 to $233.30M in 2003, a growth of $45.74M. Loan portfolio continued to show consistent and robust growth in 2003, an increase of 39.15% for the period. At December 2003, the loan portforlio valued $427.17M.

Fulbright Grants to UWI Lecturers

Three University of the West Indies Lecturers have been awarded grants under the renowned William J. Fulbright program to carry out fully-funded research in the United States that will later benefit Jamaicans and the economy. The three researchers, Dr. Lisa Lindo, Dr. Maxine Gossell-Williams and Dr. Wayne Mclaughlin of the UWI’s Department of Basic Medical Sciences, have been awarded Fulbright Grants under the Central America/Caribbean Special Fulbright Foreign Researcher Program for the Calendar Year 2004.

International All African Students’ Conference

The 16th All African Students’ Conference will be held from May 20 to 22, 2004 on the UWI, Mona Campus. The International conference which was first held in 1989 in the USA, seeks to bring together persons, particularly students, from across the world to discuss issues pertinent to Africa and African people from the continent and the Diaspora. This year’s conference is being held under the theme “The Bicentenary of Haitian Independence and the Historical Significance of the Haitian Revolution: Prospects, Possibilities and Perspectives”.

LACC Seminar on Intra Migration to Nicaragua

The Latin American-Caribbean Centre, UWI is pleased to announce the fifth in its seminar series highlighting the socio-economic and cultural impact of intra-regional West Indian migration. This year the focus will be on migration to Nicaragua. The seminar dates are July 2 to 3 and the venue is the UWI Mona Campus. Natural History Society Seminar

The Natural History Society of Jamaica presents a seminar "The Natural History of the Caribbean Island of Borinquen" by Dr. George Proctor, world reknowned Botanist, on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at 6:00 p.m. The venue is the PCJ Auditorium, 36 Trafalgar Road, Kingston 5. Refreshments will be served at 5:30 pm.

Public Lecture - Multiracial Issues in Nursing and Health Care

Dr. Carol Baxter, professor of nursing at the School of Health and Social Sciences and Head of the Centre for Nursing and Midwifery Research and Development, Middlesex University, England will deliver a public lecture on “Multiracial issues in nursing and health care: A British Perspective”, on May 20, 2004 from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. The venue for the lecture is the Main Medical Lecture Theatre, University Hospital of the West Indies, Mona.

The Elizabeth Glaser Paediatric AIDS Foundation Awards

The Elizabeth Glaser Paediatric Aids Foundation has opened calls for the following Awards: 2004 Post-doctoral Fellowship for clinicians and scientists in developed countries and the 2004 Post-doctoral Fellowship for clinicians and scientists in developing countries. The Foundation also offers the 2005 Elizabeth Glaser Paediatric Scientist Award, a five-year award for outstanding scientists to conduct research in paediatric HIV/AIDS and the 2005 International Leadership Awards – a three-year award for developing country leaders in HIV/AIDS programme implementation and research.
