St. Michael’s Theological College presents two lunch-time Fora

St. Michael’s Theological College presents two lunch-time fora - The Christian Dis-ability: Troubling the Disabled God and Femininity, Post-colonialism, the Church and Power on March 17 and March 24 from 12.30 - 1.30 p.m. at St. Michael’s Theological College. The Presenter will be Ms. Carol Marie Webster, Theologian, Anthropologist and Dance Professional. The Fora will consist of a 20-minute presentation on the topic followed by informal round table exchanges. All interested persons should register by contacting Dr. Anna Kasafi Perkins, Dean of Studies, at 927-1259.

UTC Founders’ Day

The United Theological College of the West Indies, (UTC) will be celebrating its Founders’ Day from March 13 – 17, under the theme ‘Prison Ministry and Reformative Justice’. The week begins with a Church Service at the UTC Chapel on Monday, March 13, at 6.00 p.m. The annual Founders’ Day Lecture will be delivered on Tuesday, March 14 at 9.00 a.m. by Rev Dr Edward Hunt, Director of the Prison Programme, New York Theological Seminary and will be followed by a rap session with Faculty members and students.

UWI, PIOJ to Collaborate on Study of the Jamaican Economy Since Independence

The Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) has provided some $2.8 million dollars to assist the UWI, Mona Campus, through its Department of Government, in the implementation and completion of a research project entitled “Taking Responsibility: The Jamaican Economy Since Independence”. The project is an independent research programme being supported by the PIOJ research and analysis programme.

Vice Chancellor Lauds Shortwood Teachers’ College

Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Professor Nigel Harris has lauded the sterling contribution of the Shortwood Teachers’ College in training teachers in early childhood, primary and secondary education.

15th Annual Caribbean Academy of Science Meeting and Conference

A call for papers has been made for the 15th Annual Caribbean Academy of Science Meeting and Conference theme ‘Science and Technology in a Caribbean Environment’, being held at Creole Beach Hotel, Gosier, Guadeloupe from Sunday May 21 – Tuesday May 23, 2006. Papers are invited on the following sub-themes: Natural, Agricultural/Forestry, Medical, Engineering, Social, Education and Humanities and Environmental Sciences or Natural Resource Management.

8th Annual Conference of the Caribbean Tertiary Level Personnel Association

The 8th Annual Conference of the Caribbean Tertiary Level Personnel Association will be held at the Radisson Beach Resort in Nassau, Bahamas from June 19-22. The theme for the Conference is “A Holistic Approach to Student Learning and Development: An Imperative Across Borders”. The organizing committee invites interested participants to present a paper on programmes, which can be identified as ‘best practices’ that demonstrate holistic learning.

Applications open for the Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology

The Mona Institute of Applied Sciences is currently accepting applications for the Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology. The diploma is geared towards persons who may have a first degree in an unrelated field but wish to switch career paths. It may also serve as a stepping-stone for persons who wish to pursue a Masters in Computer Science but who may not have the class of degree required to matriculate. The duration of the programme is one academic year. The deadline for application is June 30, 2006. Those interested may call the Office of Graduate Studies for application details.

Caribbean Academy of Science (CAS) stages 10th General Meeting

The 10th General Meeting of the Caribbean Academy of Sciences, Jamaica Chapter will be held on March 2 at 2.00 p.m. in the Chemistry Lecture Theatre, C5. All members and interested persons are invited to attend. the keynote address titled 'CSME - Its Effect on our Science and Technology Policy' will be delivered by Professor Neville Duncan, Professor in Caribbean Policy Studies and the Director of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (ISES), UWI.

Faculty of Social Sciences Awards Ceremony

The Faculty of Social Sciences will host its annual Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, February 28 in the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre beginning at 5.00 p.m. The guest speaker will be Assistant Commissioner of Police, Novelette Grant. Interested persons are invited to attend.

Renaming of Trade Union Education Institute

The School of Continuing Studies at the UWI Mona Campus will host a ceremony on Tuesday, February 28 to rename the Trade Union Education Institute in honour of former Prime Minister and trade unionist, the Most Hon. Hugh Shearer. Prime Minister of Jamaica, The Most Hon P J Patterson will deliver the keynote address at the function, which will be attended by Mr. Shearer’s family, members of the founding trade unions and other dignitaries.
