Annual Commemoration Celebrations and Alumni Week
The 2006 Pelican Awards for Distinguished Graduates of the University of the West Indies will be presented at the Annual Commemoration Concert and Pelican Awards Ceremony on Sunday, February 19 at the Assembly Hall on the UWI Mona Campus, beginning at 6:00 p.m. The awards will be presented during the UWI’s Annual Commemoration and Alumni Week Celebrations, which take place over the period February 16 – 24. The 2006 Pelican Awardees are Dr. Renn Holness, Professor Errol Miller and Dr. Alfred Sangster.
Condolences
The University of the West Indies, Mona extends condolences to the Mr. Cephas Rhoden and Mrs. Beverley Grant, Sanitation and Grounds, Maintenance Services on the passing their father Hezekiah Rhoden. The Funeral service will be on Sunday, February 19 at the UWI Chapel at 12:00 noon.
International Workshop on Information Literacy for Public Librarians
Librarians from sixteen countries of the commonwealth gathered in Jamaica recently for an international workshop on Information Literacy for Public Librarians across the Commonwealth. The workshop was organized within the framework of UNESCO’s information for all programme in collaboration with Commonwealth Library Association (CPMLA) as well as the University of the West Indies (UWI). COMLA’s project, written by Charles Bathambuze of Uganda and Mona Campus.
JIS Feature on Professor Kenneth Hall
The Jamaica Information Service JIS will broadcast a feature on Professor Kenneth Hall, Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Mona Campus on Monday, February 13 at 5:00 p.m. on TVJ and 5:30 p.m. on CVM.
Launch of Jamaica: the Way Forward
The Mona School of Business, the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies, the Department of Government and the Centre for Leadership and Governance will host the launch of “Jamaica: the Way Forward” on Thursday, February 16, at 3:00p.m. in the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre. The main speaker at the function will be Prof. the Hon. Rex Nettleford, Vice Chancellor Emeritus. Jamaica: The Way Forward is a publication of presentations by Bruce Golding, M.P Leader of the Jamaica Labour Party, and candidates for the presidency of the Peoples’ National Party; Dr. the Hon.
One-Day Workshop
The Caribbean Child Development Centre (CCDC) will be hosting its second annual one-day workshop on “Children and HIV/AIDS” on Tuesday, February 14. The workshop will be held at the Caribbean Child Development Centre (CCDC), UWI Mona Bowl from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and will include presentations on research in this area.
Online Course on Local E-Governance in the Caribbean
The University of the West Indies Distance Education Centre (UWIDEC) is offering the online course on Local E-Governance in the Caribbean for a second time. The course was developed and run for the first time in September to December 2005 with the assistance and support of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Professor Marlene Hamilton Appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor Board for Undergraduate Studies
Professor Marlene Hamilton has been appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Board for Undergraduate Studies to replace Professor Elsa Leo-Rhynie who has been appointed Principal of the UWI Mona Campus with effect from February 15. Professor Leo-Rhynie replaces Professor Kenneth Hall who will succeed Governor General, Sir Howard Cooke. Professor Marlene Hamilton has had a distinguished career at the University of the West Indies and was the first Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Board for Undergraduate Studies.
Registration Week at the UWI Homework Centre
“Operation UWI Homework Centre Project” presents registration week at the UWI Homework Centre beginning on Monday February 13, from 11:00 am until 5:00 pm. Registration is free and will take place at the Homework Centre (located behind the Health Centre on the Mona Campus), where a tour of the facility will follow. Registration will last for one week ending on Friday February 17.
Series on Philanthropy
The UWI Development and Endowment Fund’s Centre for Caribbean Philanthropy in collaboration with the Stella Maris Foundation will launch a weekly series on Philanthropy titled “Giving Back: the Philanthropic Information Exchange for the Profit and Not-for-profit Communities.” The principal aim of the series is to aid in the development of the non-profit sector and philanthropic practitioners by examining the role of social reinvestment in relation to the government, corporations, nonprofits, faith-based entities and international donor agencies.
