Workshop on CAPE Chemistry Syllabus
The Department of Chemistry will host over four hundred sixth formers during the week of February 27 to March 3 at a workshop dealing with certain aspects of the CAPE Chemistry Syllabus which teachers find difficult to pass onto the students. The workshops are organized annually as part of the Chemistry Department’s Outreach Programme to high schools.
12th Annual Philip Sherlock Lecture
The 12th Annual Philip Sherlock Lecture will be presented on Monday, February 27, at 6.00 p.m. at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts. Dr. Sonjah Stanley-Niaah, lecturer, and holder of the Rhodes Trust/Rex Nettleford Fellowship in Cultural Studies, will speak on “Black Performance Geographies: From Slave Ship to Ghetto”, mapping continuities from the blues through Jamaica dancehall to South African Kwaito. The public is invited.
22nd Annual Elsa Goveia Memorial Lecture
The 22nd Annual Elsa Goveia Memorial Lecture is scheduled for Wednesday, March 29 commencing at 5:00 p.m. at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts. This year’s speaker will be Professor Nigel Bolland, who will be speaking on the theme “Caribbean Cultures and Identities: Interpreting Garifuna Stories”.
Call for Papers
The Archaeological Society of Jamaica's 5th Symposium, "Redefining the African Jamaican Past" will be held on the 20th April, 2006, at the University of the West Indies, Mona, Kingston 7, Jamaica.
The Society invites proposals for papers on this and related topics on Jamaican archaeology. Titles and abstracts, (one paragraph), should be submitted by Friday March 17th. Caribbean Academy of Sciences, Jamaica Chapter
The Caribbean Academy of Sciences, Jamaica Chapter, will be held on March 2 at 2.00 p.m. in the Chemistry Lecture Theatre, C5. All members and interested persons are invited to attend. The keynote address is titled “CSME – Its Effect on our Science and Technology Policy” and will be delivered by Professor Neville Duncan, Professor in Caribbean Policy Studies and the Director of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (ISES), UWI.

Child Health Care University Health Centre
This is to advise that parents may continue to bring ill children to the Health Centre at any time during the week, Monday to Friday, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. for consultation.
Parents of children needing immunization should make appointments for Dr. Karen Foster-Williams to do evaluations on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons between the hours of 2:00 and 3:00 p.m.

Latinos in the United States
The Department of Literatures in English is hosting the film series 'LATINOS in the UNITED STATES' during Semester II, 2006. Films will be shown each Friday at 11 a.m. in N4 in the Faculty of Humanities and Education, UWI, Mona. The series is hosted by Dr. Gregory Stephens, Lecturer of Cultural Studies and Film, in association with E21h (Modern American Literary Prose); Special 2006 Topic: U.S. Caribbean & Latin American Immigrant Literature. UWIDEC
The UWI Distance Education Centre (UIWDEC) has adopted a new approach called ‘Blended Learning’ as part of an initiative to enhance the delivery of its programmes. Blended Learning incorporates interactive, computer-based technologies into the traditional mix of print, audio-conferencing and face to face tutorials offered by UWIDEC. The new approach was adopted last September, when UWIDEC launched nine course websites as part of a pilot project.
