Rex Nettleford Students Make Donation to Jamaica Cancer Society

Students of the Rex Nettleford Hall, UWI, Mona donated twenty-five thousand dollars (J$25,000) to the Jamaica Cancer Society recently as part of the Hall’s outreach. The presentation was made by Hall Chairman, Lionel Myrie along with two Resident Advisors, Warren Thompson and Rose-Ann Williams. The fund was raised from an annual walkathon staged by students from Rex Nettleford Hall earlier this semester.
Campus Closure

The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus wishes to advise that all administrative offices and teaching departments will be closed on Thursday, December 31, 2009 until Monday, January 4, 2010 when regular business hours will resume, that is 8:30 am to 4:30 pm weekdays. Graduation Night Photos Now Available

2009 Graduates are advised that Graduation Night Photographs are now available and may be collected at the Public Relations Office, UWI, Mona on Mondays to Fridays between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm until Friday, January 31, 2010. Thereafter photographs may be collected at the photographer’s studio, Spauldings Photos located at Suite #26, Banana Board Building, 10 South Avenue, Kingston 4, telephone 967-3155.
Portrait photographs taken by graduates may be collected from Bryan’s Studio Ltd., located at 38c Constant Spring Road, Kings Plaza, Monday to Friday, 9.00 am – 5:00 pm and Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm.
UWI, Mona Carol Service

The UWI, Mona will host its annual Carol Service on Sunday, December 13, 2009 at 7 pm at the University Chapel, UWI, Mona. The University Singers will perform on this occasion. The guest soloist is Mrs. Pauline Watson.

Eighth Michael Manley Lecture

“Jamaica and the World: Issues of International Law” is the title of the 2009 Michael Manley Lecture being delivered by Professor Stephen Vasciannie, Principal, Norman Manley Law School. This eighth lecture takes place on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 1 pm at the Executive Lecture Theatre, Sir Alister McIntyre Building, UWI, Mona.
The Michael Manley Lecture is one of three annual events organised by the Michael Manley Foundation and is designed to preserve and promote the intellectual, political and philosophical legacy of the late former Prime Minister. The lecture commemorates the anniversary of the birth of the late Honourable Michael Manley.
Annual Long Service Awards Ceremony

Over one hundred and fifty UWI, Mona employees will be recognized for their service to the University at the annual Long Service Awards Ceremony on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 5 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. The guest speaker will be Winston Bennett, motivational speaker.

UWI, Mona Hosts Public Forum to Mark International Day for the Disabled

The Centre for Disability Studies (CDS) and the Office of Special Student Services, UWI, Mona will host a public forum on Thursday, December 3, which is designated as International Day for the Disabled. The Forum which takes place at the UWI, Mona Lions Club Centre for Students with Special Needs at 12: 30 pm will address the International Convention for the Disabled and the pending National Disability Bill. The International Convention for the Disabled was signed and ratified by Jamaica at the United Nations in March 2007 and the National Disability Bill is currently being drafted by the Government to protect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.
UWI, Mona Host Inaugural Rastafari Studies Conference in 2010

The Institute of Caribbean Studies at UWI, Mona hosts the inaugural Rastafari Studies Conference in recognition of two anniversaries namely; the 50th anniversary of the “Report on the Rastafari Movement” and 80th anniversary of the Rastafari movement and the Birthday of Pan African champion and first national hero, the Honourable Marcus Garvey. The Conference takes place on August 17-20, 2010 under the joint chairmanship of VC Emeritus Professor Rex Nettleford and Professor Emeritus, Sir Roy Augier. The event is themed, “Negotiating the African Presence: Rastafari Livity and Scholarship.”
