iModules Offers Scholarships to UWI Students Via Alumni Online

iModules, the University’s Encompass hosted solution software provider is offering student scholarships which are open to UWI students in 2010.The scholarships are available through UWI's Alumni web and social networking community: Alumni Online (www.alumnionline.uwi.edu).  Eleven scholarships are being awarded; eight valued at US $1000 each and three at US$2,500 each.
 
Applications must be completed by April 1, 2010 and will be reviewed during the month of April. The scholarship winners will be announced on May 3, 2010. To qualify for the scholarship applicants must be or will be full time UWI students and a minimum C grade point average (GPA).

The AFJ/ Cobb Family Lecture

“Understanding the Development of Criminal Behavior in Children: Prescriptions and Solutions” is the title of the annual AFJ/ Cobb family Lecture which is a part of the Research Day activities being held at University of the West Indies, Mona. The Lecture takes place on Thursday, January 28, 2010 at 5:30 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona. Dr. Claudette Crawford-Brown, lecturer in the Department of Psychology, Sociology and Social Work and Founder / Coordinator, Violence Prevention Programme at UWI, Mona will deliver the lecture.

Pregnancy in Advanced Maternal Age

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Child Health, UWI, Mona hosts the 9th Annual Perinatal Audit and Symposium under the theme, "Pregnancy in the Woman of Advanced Maternal Age". The Symposium takes place on February 12-13, 2010 at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre located at the University Hospital of the West Indies.

The Symposium will feature workshops and discussions featuring several topics such as: “Obesity in Pregnancy,” “Twin Pregnancy,” “Infant of the Diabetic Mother” and Assessment, counselling and support of women after perinatal loss.”

The university community is invited.

'Gender Equality, Sociobiology & Corporate Governance'

The Faculty of Law at UWI, Mona will host a public Lecture as part of the Research day activities on Friday, January 29, 2010 at 10 am at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona. The Lecture is titled, 'Gender Equality, Sociobiology and Corporate Governance’. Dr. Kólá Abímbólá, lecturer in Company and Commercial law at the University of Leicester, UK will deliver the lecture. The lecture is also the first lecture in the Mona Law Series.

UWI, Mona and UTech Host UNI-T DoAthlon on February 14

The University of the West Indies, Mona and University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) partner to host the UNI-T DoAthlon and 5K Fun Run/ Walk on Sunday, February 14, 2010 under the theme, “Bringing Back the Love”. The DoAthlon and Fun Run/ Walk begins at UTech at 6:30 am and ends at the Mona Bowl, UWI with a Recognition Ceremony of top participants.

The event serves a dual purpose of promoting healthy lifestyles and community involvement and hence the university community and persons from neighboring communities are specially invited to participate in this event. The public is also invited to participate. There is also a fund raising element to the initiative as proceeds from the event is donated to the Sir John Golding Centre’s Rebuilding Fund.

UWI, Mona Launches Physics Field Trip for CSEC Students

The Department of Physics, UWI, Mona launched the Fifth Form Field Trip for CSEC Physics students on January 18, 2010 at 9 am.  The Field Trip is a series of two-hour sessions designed to give fifth  form Physics students an opportunity to experience Physics in a fun-filled environment by using lively and interactive demonstrations, computer simulations and hands on experiments related to their syllabus. Topics covered during the Field Trip include: “Reflection and Refraction” and “Gravitational Force”.

The Field Trip took place from January 18-20, 2010 in the Department of Physics, UWI, Mona. More than six hundred CSEC students from fourteen schools in the Corporate Area and rural communities attended the sessions over the three days.

Mona Off to "Worlds"

The University of the West Indies, Mona Debating team is currently in Turkey participating in the 30th World Universities Debating Championships hosted by Koc University in Antalya, Turkey. This is the biggest event on the international debating calendar and is often referred to as the “Olympics” of debating. Four hundred teams from one hundred and fifty institutions in forty five countries on all five continents are expected to compete.

23rd Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry Symposium

The Department of Chemistry at UWI, Mona hosts the 23rd Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry Symposium on January 4-7, 2010. The event officially begins with an Opening Ceremony on Monday, January 4, 2010 at 9:30 am at Chemistry Lecture Theatre (Chem 5). As part of the Opening Ceremony there will be a pre-launch of the book, “the Department of Chemistry, UWI, Mona” authored by Ken Magnus, former Dean of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, UWI, Mona and Dr. Robert Lancashire, Professor of Chemistry, UWI, Mona. The book gives an account of the history of the Department of Chemistry highlighting its teaching, research and the impact to public policy.

UWI, Mona Football Scholarship Festival

The University of the West Indies, Mona will collaborate with the Inter Secondary Schools Association (ISSA) to host the UWI, Mona Football Scholarship Festival on January 7-10, 2010 at the Mona Bowl. The Football Scholarship Festival is a part of the refocused sports development efforts by UWI, Mona.

The event is designed to allow talented and academically eligible young athletes to be recruited by local and overseas coaches and provide an opportunity for them to attend a University free of cost through participation in a series of football matches.

Call for Papers and Panels-Freedom and Power in the Caribbean: The Work of Gordon K. Lewis

The Centre for Caribbean Thought (CCT) UWI, Mona, in association with Africana Studies at Brown University and the Institute of Caribbean Studies, University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras will host the Seventh Caribbean Reasonings Conference. The Conference is entitled Freedom and Power in the Caribbean: the Work of Gordon K. Lewis. It is scheduled to take place on June 3-5, 2010 at the University of the West Indies, Mona.
